Recorders are often seen as childish instruments, or precursors to other wind instruments like the clarinet and oboe. However, recorders are indeed unique musical instruments in their own right, and have been for hundreds of years!
Recorders first became popular in medaeval times, with a great deal of music written for the recorder in that period. At that time, recorders were wooden and actually made a different sound to the recorders we have now. The tone was softer, and they were a little quieter, probably due to the wood they were made from.
Nowadays, most recorders are plastic - you can pick them up in toy shops in an array of colours, with basic tutorial booklets for around £5. For a good quality descant recorder, like a Yamaha, expect to pay around £12 A Yamaha is worth buying once you know you want to play the recorder to a decent standard. They are sturdy instruments, and will last you long past your initial stage.
The most common recorders are the little descants. These are the ones that children clutch on their way to school on "recorder day". They are popular in schools because you don't need big hands to play them, and they are very light and portable. Usually, recorder playing in school is taught as a class, which is good for social playing, and helps to teach players to listen to others. However, this does make it hard for people to go at their own pace, whether that is slower or faster than others in the class. Do take this into account if you organise, or send your child to a recorder group.
Once people have mastered the descant, there are several other sizes of recorder to learn. As with all instruments, the larger the recorder, the lower the sound it produces will be. Larger recorders are softer on the ears than descants as they are less shrill, but you need quite a finger stretch to play some of the largest ones.
The treble recorder has the same fingering as the lower register of the clarinet, so it may be an idea to learn the treble alongside the clarinet. Most accomplished recorder players can play a number of different recorders to an advanced level.
Once a good level of proficiency has been reached, there are a great number of techniques to be learnt in recorder playing. As well as embrochure (mouth position) and tongueing (stopping and starting the air flow into the mouthpiece) some modern pieces involve blowing into the wrong end of the recorder, or covering up the air hole in the barrel. It is these advanced techniques which separate accomplished players from tootling experimenters (like myself).
If you just want a small, fairly easy instrument to get a simple tune out of, I would steer towards the penny whistle before the recorder, as it is easier to play, and rarely has tuning difficulties as recorders occasionally do.
If your recorder is out of tune with other instruments you are playing with, you can alter the pitch by pulling out or pushing in the barrel of the recorder. Since you are effectively lengthening or shortening the instrument, this makes the sound higher (if shortened) or lower (if lengthened) as described earlier.
However, if you are looking for an interesting option in instrumental playing, and aren't too concerned with missing out on orchestral playing, then the recorder is an original and satisfying choice. You can also spend many hours arguing with cynics that you are NOT a glorified beer bottle blower ;o)

Advantages: useful for introducing young children to music Disadvantages: difficult to play well
OK, this opinion isn't actually about a particulat make of Recorder. It's really a general comment on the instrument, but I had to place it somewhere.
It might suprise you to find out that the recorder is actually a much more difficult instrument to learn than people first imagine. Yes, ok, a large number of school children are taught how to blow down one and move their fingers to produce tunes. However, there really is much more to it than that. ... ...alternative fingering and breathing to think about, to name just a few of the difficulties. Tonguing is the way in which you 'articulate' the music which you are playing, you may use doo, daa, too, taa etc. depending on the style of the music. Tuning is very important in that if you are playing with other musicians, be it other recorders or piano, the music naturally is much more pleasing to listen to if the recorder is in tune with the other instruments. ...

right, well i have a yamaha flute, and i've had my new one for about 6months now. i absolutely love it! it's so playable, and the tuning is absolutely superb! i play in the leeds youth wind orchestra, and with my flute being made of silver, the playability is absolutely fantastic. i've been offered numerous solos, and many have commented on the sound of the instrument. however, these flutes don't come cheap unfortunately, but in the case of mine, ... ...have. i would recommend all yamaha instruments, as yamaha are consistent in their production and quality. the model is irrelevant, as it is unique, but the prices range between £1-5000. mine was shipped in from japan, so was rather pricey, but they can be fond in most music shops for much cheaper. they can either be bought second hand, or ones that are not entirely made of silver, these are better for begginners, and this is how i started. the first ...

Advantages: Great Tom Sound..Easy to tune Disadvantages: Bass Drums need a Front resonant head with a smaller port
I first came into contact with Yamah recording custom drums when they were provided as backline equipment when my band was out of town.
I was very impressed with the tom sound that was very pure and resonant without any overtones. Its not often you can mike up drums without any dampning and still please the sound guy!!
Eventually i bought a second hand kit on Ebay which confirmed that the toms are very clean and clear.
The bass drum which is a 20x 16 on the other hand requires more work .I think the bass drum suffers with the Yamaha front resonant head with the large hole in the middle.I think when i replace this with another head with a small port the bass drum will have more depth
Overall these are great drums but the Bass drums need to be worked over to get them to the standard comprable to the toms which are arguably the best ...

The authentic sounds of piano and other instruments are produced using what Yamaha calls the AWM (Advance Wave Memory). This is where various instruments that are loaded into the CVP405 are recordings taken from the original instruments. This means that trumpets really sound like trumpets, guitars really sound like guitars, a cathedral organ will really sound like a cathedral organ and its majestic sound will really shakes the walls of your house if you want it to! And there are hundreds more different voices that you can mix and match and create your own orchestrations.
Another other great thing about the CVP405 is that you can plug in a microphone, adjust the settings to have ...

As plastic recorders go, you really have a choice betweeen Dolmetch, Yamaha and Aulos. Over a period of thirty years I have been using Aulos recorders for group work and solo work. The Aulos range of recorders give a good sound for consort/group playing and are affordable even for the larger more expensive instruments. The full range of recorders from Bass to sopranino is available in two basic designs. I have mainly used the baroque. The treble recorder of this set is of very good quality, and is suitable for an intermendiate level of solo playing. In fact it was so good that my youngest daughter took and passed her Grade 8 recorder Associated Board on it. At the time we could not afford to upgrade to a more professional instrument, but she does not regret using the Aulos. We took the Aulos to Africa with us for five years. This was ...
