Advantages: Loads of grip, great for the city, goes miles on tiny tank, makes you smile. Disadvantages: Underpowered even for a 125, not ideal for tall riders.

The alternative at the time was Honda's XR125 which I decided against at the time because the Xt125X was more of a rarity and I liked the supermoto styling. I am glad I made this choice as I have since ridden the Honda and it gets spanked by vespas on the commute.

This was the bike that helped my to pass my motorcycle test first time. Having done the compulsory basic training (CBT) I went straight to Infinity Motorcycles in Clapham and bought one of these. I had been doing a good deal of research on the internet reading reviews and experiences trying to get a good idea of how best to get to grips with the exciting new world of motorcycling. I wanted to get a manual bike that would help me hone my skills working the clutch and gear levers so that I could move on to a larger bike before too long and the XT125X was a brilliant interim machine.
The alternative at the time was Honda's XR125 which I decided against at the time because the Xt125X was more of a rarity and I liked the supermoto styling. I am glad I made this choice as I have since ridden the Honda and it gets spanked by vespas on the commute.
As a novice in a city it is a joy to ride as it has big grippy tyres that give you confidence round the bends and large, effective breaks that stop you when you need to be stopped. The engine brings a smile to the face also. With a redline of only 8,000 rpm you will find yourself changing gears several times up to 30 mph but rather than frustrate you this gives you a sense of speed as the little 125 buzzes up to the legal limit in no time. Above 30 mph it begins to struggle and realistically tops out at about 65 or so but a combination of factors from wind to incline can push it up to its top top speed of about 73 mph.
I will also mention that I am 6'3'' so might have looked a little daft riding around London on it but I proved that it can be made to fit someone of my height even though I may have spent most of my time sitting in what was effectively the pillion seat.
It is a fun little package but I don't understand why they didn't use the full amount of power allowed for a learner legal 125. It feels a little underdevleoped and would definitely benefit from a couple more BHP. You are unlikely to want to hang on to it for much longer than it takes you to pass your test so I wouldn't worry about not being able to race the 600s!
