Growing up, I always associated Petits Filous with the blonde little French girl that always appeared on the TV adverts. It only occured to me the other day when I was out grocery shopping with my mum, that I'd yet to try the well-known yogurt that I'd always heard so much about. So, in the basket it went, for me to try for the first time in my fourteen years of existance!
Petits Filous is a fromage frais, manufactured by the wonderful Yoplait brand. In English, 'Petits Filous' actually means 'Little Rascals', and just by this name, it's clear to see the target market for this little yogurt. However, Petits Filous has been enjoyed by numerous people, including adults, and I thought it was time to jump on the band wagon - or should I say, yogurt wagon!
Avaliable in packs of 4, Petis Filous has a very distinctive cardboard packaging, consisting of the colours purple, white and red, with the words 'Petits Filous' in large letters across the front. Underneath this, written in red writing, is the description 'fruity smooth yogurt', and a picture of two raspberries and a strawberry, floating in a delicious-looking, pink-coloured yogurt. There's also the statement, in smaller writing, 'For Stronger Bones', and a picture of a bone-shaped icon, fitted together like a jigsaw - one end reading 'Vitamin D' and the other reading 'Calcium'.
Inside the cardboard packaging are four, decent-sized pots of the yogurt, each made up of a bright red plastic and sealed with a similar design as the packaging - however this time, instead of a picture of two raspberries and a strawberry, there's either a picture of one raspberry or one strawberry, making it easy to identify which pot belongs to which flavour.
The first pot I tried was the Raspberry flavour, and feeling rather tempted to take a look at the yogurt I was going to try for the first time, I decided it was time to peel back the foil lid. Doing so was an extremely easy job, and it caused no mess unlike some yogurt pots which can splurt a little of the yogurt contents onto your face! As soon as the lid was peeled back, I was faced with a lovely, light violet-coloured yogurt, that looked exceptionally thick and creamy. Although there was no immediate aroma from the yogurt, bringing the pot closer to my face, I was hit by a rather sweet raspberry scent that was very inviting, indeed! All was great so far, but it all came down to one thing - the taste. Would the yogurt meet my expectations?
Taking my teaspoon and dipping it into the yogurt, I brought it to my mouth to let my tastebuds work their magic. The result? Just like the smell, the yogurt tasted very sweet and creamy, just as I had hoped. The mild raspberry flavour was delightful, and wasn't so sweet that it was too much. The consistency of the yogurt and flavour mixed together perfectly, creating a delicious yogurt experience!
The next day for my lunch, I decided it was time to try the other flavour that had accompanied the lovely raspberry yogurt. Peeling off the lid was the same, easy task as the day before, causing no mess or random splurts of yogurt to hit me in the eye! This time though, instead of a light purple shade, I was faced with a beautiful baby pink coloured yogurt, that looked just as refreshing and creamy as the day before. This time the aroma was of an extremely sweet, strawberry scent, that quite easily could make one's mouth-water as soon as it hits their nostrils.
My tastebuds did their thing as I brought the first tiny spoonful of the mixture to my mouth - and holy baby jesus, was I pleased! The first taste was of the rich, creaminess that was easily detectable upon appearance, but as soon that had tingled my tongue, the dominating strawberry flavour bounced on through, that was even sweeter than the raspberry flavour that I'd tasted the day before. The strawberry was also of a thinner consistency than the raspberry yogurt, although I'm assuming this is because of the sweetness that the strawberry contains in itself!
With both flavours tasting absolutely delicious, there was only one thing left that could bring the yogurt down. The one thing that I always feared the most - the nutrition. Now because this yogurt is aimed at young children, I hoped it would be a rather healthy snack - but would it disappoint?
Nutritional information per 100g pot:
Energy 416kJ
Calories 100kcal
Protein 3.5g
Carbohydrate 14.9g
of which sugars 14.5g
Fat 2.8g
of which saturates 1.9g
Fibre 0.2g
Sodium 0.051g
With 100 calories and 2.8g of fat per pot, this fromage frais is quite a healthy treat. And with only 14.5g of sugar, compared to other yogurts, this is a pretty low amount, too! The back of the packaging also states that each pot contains 134mg of calcium, which is 17% of the RDA, and also 17% of the RDA of Vitamin D. The yogurt is made with real fruit purée and contains no artifical colours, sweeteners or preservatives - and is suitable for vegetarians, too!
Versatility wise, the Petits Filous would be a good accompaniment to a bowl of fresh fruit, or perhaps with a frozen dessert such as sorbet. However, I personally think it would be too sweet to mix with your breakfast cereal - such as Weetabix, as the flavour would be too over powering. The yogurt pot is reasonable size, therefore it could make a healthy addition to your child's lunchbox! It'd also make a satisfying snack for when you're feeling peckish or a sweet after-meal dessert.
Overall, I found the strawberry just that more delicious, however both flavours definately did not disappoint. Each pack costs around the reasonable price of £1.57, depending on where you shop, making it affordable for even those that are keeping an eye on how much money they spend. Next time you stumble upon the yogurt aisle in your local supermarket, pick up a pack and place it in your trolley. It's not worth missing out on!
Advantages: Small pots, low in fat and calories, creamy and delicious, no bits Disadvantages: Too many strawberry based flavours, and may be too small for some people!
Yoplait Petits Filous are yet another product which we have been able to try thanks to Tesco Direct. Unlike the baked beans, these were not a substitute – they simply turned up mysteriously with our shopping one day. They were not on the order, or the receipt, so we can only assume they were part of a special offer, or simply included by an oversight! Whatever the reason behind their appearance, they were a very welcome addition to our shopping!
... ...with real fruit puree. They normally come in packs of 12 pots, but in this case the pack had 50% extra free so there were 18 pots. The cost is £1.98, so with the current special offer they cost just over 10p per 60g pot. The normal 12 pack contains 2 each of 6 flavours:-
• Peach and Strawberry
• Apricot
• Raspberry
• Strawberry
• Strawberry and Vanilla
• Blackberry and Raspberry
The fromage frais does not contain any fruit bits, seeds or pips, ...

Yoplait Petits Filous miniature pots of fromage frais just got bigger!
I have just been shopping to Asda and found, as well as the usual packs of 12 x 60g pots, they also had packs of 6 x 100g pots too.
The packs of the small pots cost about £2 and contain 2 each of the following flavours: Apricot, Raspberry, Strawberry, Strawberry and Vanilla, Peach and Strawberry and Blackberry and Raspberry.
But I bought the pack of six larger pots costing ... ...still low in calories. The small pots contain 67 calories and the larger pots contain 114 calories per pot. The other nutritional values per 100g of fromage frais are as follows:
Fat 2.9g
Protein 6.8g
Carbohydrate 1.5g

Petits Filous fromage frais comes in packs of 6 minipots. There are two varieties available, depending on the flavours. There's the 2 X strawberry, 2 X apricot, 2 X strawberry&peach variety, and also the 2 X strawberry, 2 X raspberry, 2 X strawberry&vanilla variety. There used to be a forest fruits ... ...You can also buy multi-packs of 3X6 pots. The individual pots come apart with an easy snap. This always leaves two corners of each pot with dangerously sharp edges. I often wonder if anyone has ever had an accident with these. Toddlers like to hold these pots in their little hands, and being toddlers, they might want to wander off with it. If they fall over, like they often do, they can easily hurt themselves on these sharp edges. I always round ...

Advantages: Creamy, nice texture Disadvantages: No actual fruit, just fromage frais
I wouldn't say that Petits Filous are my favourite yogurts, but as we had some in the fridge and they were nearing their use by date, I thought I may as well use them up rather than just throw them away. Petits Filous translates literally as 'little rascals', and with a name like this, it is obvious that these yogurts are aimed mainly at children. In fact, it's not just children that these are aimed at but also babies from 4 months old.
So what ... ...made with real fruit purée. They come in several flavours:

• Blackberry and Raspberry;

• Raspberry.
I believe there are also some other flavours, including chocolate and caramel, but I haven't tried them.
According to the packaging, Petits Filous contain no added preservatives or artificial sweeteners and are suitable for both vegetarians and those with an intolerance ...

Advantages: Taste fab, healthy, babies love them Disadvantages: 1 is never enough
I remember my younger sister eating these as a baby, I also remember pinching them from the fridge and pretending it wasn't me, I too remember my mum always finished Georgie's off.
Well having started the weaning process with Anna a few months ago she was starting to want more new flavours and textures and I remembered these. In my local Tesco they have them at £1.39 a pack of 6, at the moment they are buy one get one free.
The are suitable from ... ...They contain a meagre 76 calories and 2.8g of fat per pot. Unfortunately the pots are small so feel free to eat 2 or 3 a time.
The packs I buy contain 2 each of the following flavours:
Forest fruits
Strawberry
Strawberry and Vanilla (the yummiest one)
Anna loves these as much as I do, they have a lovely smooth texture but are quite thick which is great for preparing little ones for lumpier food ..gets them used to gumming rather than just swallowing.

Frubes are a wonderful if not 'money grabbing' invention from the makers of Petitfilous. For around£2.20 you can buy a box of nine Frubes which contain 40g of yogurt in each. Inside a tube like wrapper is a whole load of fromage frais that is sitting there just waiting to be eaten. They come in thre different flavours and these are forest fruits, strawberry and peach and are a great source of calcium for the young and old!
In a way these Frubes are a bit of a cop out but on the other hand they are a bit of a miracle invention. They combine the goodness of a fromage frais and the convenience of a chocolate bar. The tube they come in is easy to open although the really young ones may struggle a little. Once the tear off top is open, you just squeeze and suck to you hearts content or until the packet is empty.
I love the fact that ...

have always counted calories when I?m on a diet as I find it easier to keep track of how I?m doing that way.
This yoghurt came as part of a pack of four costing £1.17, which works out at fractionally over 29p per pot, which is a good price in anyone?s money. They were purchased from my local branch of Asda but they are available in most of the major supermarkets. The other three flavours in the pack are strawberry, raspberry and peach.
I shall be pouring the strawberry one over my Wimbledon strawberries later in the week.
