Advantages: Great Novel, alot of tension Disadvantages: Very Long and in three voumes.
GreatExpectations is one of CharlesDickens best and well known work, and in my review i will be analyzing the characters, places and themes throughout the book. Dickens often wrote about children and this is no exception in this novel.
Firstly the main character is Phillip Pirrip or Pip as he is reffered to throughout the book. Pip is the protagonist in the book and the narrator, meaning it is essential for Dickens to build a strong bond between him and the reader therefore Pip has to be a believable character. And this he is, he is an orphan (which two percent of children in the Victorian age where) and he is in poverty, both easily associable points. Pips parents are dead, however we are not told how or when they died, just that Pip cannot remember them anymore. His naivety is shown as he can describe his parents from ...
Advantages: Characters are exceptional. Disadvantages: Quite lengthy.
GreatExpectations
The novel GreatExpectations, byCharlesDickens, follows a young, socially inexperienced boy through his journey of disillusionment and morally incorrect choices. These choices ultimately end with his inability to adapt to life and the relationships around him.
Pip encounters various tragedies throughout his perplexing years, plunging him into a life of deceit, debt and mysterious truths. These are all told through the eyes of the older Pip, frequently doubting himself and accusing himself of immoral deeds. His loneliness overshadows all signs of superiority he displays in his workings in London. The truths of his benefactor bring together all the mysteries and suspense in his life, finally leaving the reader wondering if he is going to live the rest of his life scarred by these tragedies. Highlighting ...
Advantages: Great story that offers so much to the reader that they won't want to stop until it's over Disadvantages: May miss parts of the audio and story
I would have to say that I am not a fan of Dicken's writing. A man who was paid by the word would of course create many novels that filled with wordy sentences and long drawn out passages. When assigned GreatExpectations these were the ideas that were conjured up in my mind and I tried so hard to avoid reading the book so I figured listening to it would be better. As soon as I heard the first chapter though I was hooked. The story begins with the excitement of the main character Pip meeting a convict, while in a graveyard visiting his parents graves. The convict takes everything Pip has and asks where his mother is, which Pip then points to on of the graves. Though the reader may feel it would be weird to laugh at the rather tragic fact that Pip if an orphan it is equally funny that the convict is slightly startled. The reader is ...
