I have banked with Yorkshire bank since I was three, so I have given them 21 years worth of my money and custom. I first joined them with school as they suggested a bank account for children, so my mum kindly opened one for me.
I had this bank account until I was 18, as I could not have a switch until I was that age. This is really the first experience I had had with them. I went in to make an appointment and spoke to a nice lady who organised a meeting. I had managed to save up quite a bit so the lady was very nice. She suggested accounts that I could have in relation to the money that I had. She suggested a high interest account a current account (Cheque Book and Switch) and an ISA (Tax Free Savings). I was happy with this service, probably as I did not really know anything about banks at the time.
The staff/service
The staff are quite unfriendly in this bank, they never smile and are always going on their dinner when you go in. I have found them to be quite incompetent and ignorant at times. I went in the other day and the stupid cashier was eating and talking while serving me. Bad manners or what? I bore with her and she did not even say bye or anything. Below I have written some other bad experiences that I have had.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bad points/service
I have to say that I have had more bad experiences than good ones. The first bad experience that I had had with them was when I went to the cash machine to draw money out. I checked my balance and saw that I had £13 left in my account; I drew it out and happily went off and spent it. I received my statement that month and it said that I had gone overdrawn; I was very frustrated and went in to the bank to complain what had happened. They said that they had not updated their system and I had drawn my money out, hence the reason that I went overdrawn. They made me wait then the guy on the counter said, 'I'll check your account', he checked it and said that they would cancel the charge as I had not done it before, I then said 'I'm sorry but you will cancel it as it is your mistake' he apologised and agreed. I know I got what I wanted but the service was a little shaky.
The second bad experience was when I went in to put some money into my ISA. Now this involves a special form that asks various questions. I first went to the desk and the stupid excuse for a bank clerk said, 'ooooo, I don't know how to fill one of those in', derrrrrrr, so I had to go to another counter and wait about 25 mins to put some money in. Then the girl there did not know how to do it. I was so frustrated at this point and when I finally go to fill in the form and the girl got half way through the questions and began to be different than before so I confronted her and she said 'I think that I have filled in the wrong one'. I just said in a firm voice 'forget it' and walked out. I was so angry. Anyway a week later I went back in and asked to put money in my ISA. She filled in the forms, all was fine, or so I thought. A week later I received a phone call saying that the bank had filled in a stocks and shares ISA form in. I was very very annoyed and had to sent various letters and make phone calls to trace my money. It was a real pain in the ass. In conclusion to the service I think it is rubbish and the staff are not very knowledgeable when it comes to their products. You are left to wait and are not given an apology when you are left to wait. Overall he service is very poor and when you are in you just want to get out as the staff are not very hospitable. They also do not know how to conduct their job to the satisfaction of the customer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Charges/rates
The current rate on current account is between 0.10% and 3.80% which is quote rubbish compared to other banks. I tend to keep as little funds as possible in this and only use it for switch payments. The savings account interest is not much either £0-249 is currently 0.96% if you have 100, 000 or over it is still only 3% which is also rubbish. I have over £1500 in this and only received £5 for six months and was taxed a £1, so you are looking at about £9 for a full year also rubbish. Now the ISA which is tax free was very disappointing this year I received a measly £88 and believe me is nothing in comparison to what I have in there. I'm not telling you how much as you'll all want to marry me lol. The current rates for this account are between 3.05% for £0-999 and 4.75% for £12,000 and over compared to other banks. The ones that I have seen for the amount I have are considerably higher than that of Yorkshire bank.
Here is an example of their loan rates: A typical fixed rate personal loan of £5,000 including optional Repayment Protection Insurance premium of £1,015.13 over 48 months (6.9% APR) is repayable by 47 monthly instalments of £140.17 and one payment of £139.89. Total amount repayable £6,727.88. Total charge for credit £712.75. make your own decision weather this is good or not as I am not a loany person.
The charges for going overdrawn and cheques bouncing is currently at around £25 which I have found is quite competitive compared to other banks and if you do go overdrawn you could try to go in and say that if they do not cancel charges you want to close all your accounts and want all your money back now I'm sure they'll cancel them for you. That is if you are not going overdrawn every month. They are likely to say bye bye then. For full interest rates and accounts available visit www.ybonline.co.uk for more details.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Internet banking
I also have internet banking with Yorkshire, it was very easy to set up and was up and running within about a week. I had to register with telephone banking then they sent me letters out and I could then apply for online banking. The registration process was painless and easy. I was given step by step instructions that went exactly to plan, I was set up with no hitches. The site is always very fast and is rarely down, it has sometimes been down due to the fact of busy times, either at the bank or the internet itself being busy. The layout of the site is a little dated but easy to use due to this. The only think annoying about it is that you have to click about 5 pages before you can even to sign in. These are just warnings, but I find that one is ok. I don't mind the 2 pages to sign in as it is a sign of security. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Overall
The only thing that I think that is good about this bank is the fact that you can get a maestro which can be used everywhere across the country and the world. I hate those visa electron you are limited with what you can use it for. For instance you can use it in petrol machines and other non-person service points whereas with a visa electron this is not possible therefore inconvenient as I get petrol from a self serve. I would recommend this bank if you are just interested in having a current account. I would however not recommend it if you have money to invest as the rates are very low and you will not get much return on your money. Oh and if you are not really bothered about good customer service.
Thanks for reading and comments are greatly appreciated.

...wife and I opened a Yorkshire Bank executive bank account. For this privilege we paid about £50 per year but for this we got what was called an executive account. Special cheque card with a higher limit, a gold mastercard, automatic overdraft of up to £500, a personal banker who sorted any problems out directly for you. This was fine, on paper. He said whereas other banks gave people a chance, the YB would always go straight for the jugular regardless of who it was or what the circumstances. When we started to reclaim out bank charges, it became apparent that hundreds of other Yorkshire Bank customers had had the same experiences.
I am ashamed to be from Yorkshire and have this bank reflect on us.

OK maybe that's not fair, until a year or so ago the Yorkshire Bank was in fact my favourite of the triumvirate of Banks I hold accounts at. (The others being Barclays and the Halifax) But that was way back when I was employed.

...to hear me say 'Go Yorkshire Go' but this statment refers to the Yorkshire Bank plc.
I wrote a review some time ago regarding Lloyds TSB and how disgusted I was with their service. I decided then to go over to the Yorkshire Bank plc. What a brilliant move! I have nothing but praise for the people at the Yorkshire Bank plc - Wigan Branch.
Firstly, I have my own advisor who I see each time I want an appointment, which makes my visit to the bank easier ... ...member of staff at the Yorkshire can do each others job. For example, there's none of that, "Sorry you can't see Mr X for that, he only deals with..... blah blah blah!!" Which is a fob off I got with Lloyds TSB. The staff are friendly, always happy to help and are good at sorting your finances out to suit you and your lifestyle and let's face it, aren't banks there to provide that kind of service with our money. I mean it is 'OUR' money we leave ...

I moved to the YorkshireBank eighteen months ago after an horrific experience with Abbey Bank ( but that is worthy of a review in it's own right!!).
I opened a current account and a savings account and I have been more than satisfied with the service I have received over that time. I receive a statement regularly, although for envirnomental reasons would really like to see the option of paper free invoices with having access to my statements on the internet.

Advantages: Cash cards are a nice colour Disadvantages: Rude and idle staff, cash points very temperamental, they only send statements every once in a blue moon - even then the envelope sometimes isn't sealed.
Having banked with YorkshireBank since 1991, I have recently decided that enough is enough.
I took out a personal loan with them a couple of years ago, and, at the beginning of 1999, I took out an extension on this loan as I was getting married. They told me that, if it were a first loan, I would be able to have it on a lower APR. However, since I already had a loan with them, they were going to charge me 3% EXTRA APR - despite the fact that I was effectively paying off my existing loan and taking a new one! I took the loan anyway as I didn't see any other option. To this day, I still fail to see the sense in their logic.

Advantages: Very flexible repayment Disadvantages: not the lowest interest rate
The current headline makers are the lenders offering the lowest interest rates. This is no bad thing - it lowers the initial monthly repayment. However, if you can honestly afford to pay more off your mortgage then most advisers agree you should do so.
The YorkshireBank "aussie" mortgage - otherwise called the flexible payment mortgage - offers the opportunity to pay off whatever extra amount you can at any time. The repayment is credited directly to your mortgage account and you stop paying interest on the amount repaid from that point. It is only a standard high street variable rate but the other features can make it a real money saver.
If required, you can opt for a step up in payments each year, reviewable on each anniversary. Using the bank's own offered step up can knock 7-8 years off a 25 year mortgage. I,ve just ...
