Like everyone else I woke on Tuesday last week to the news that the riots which had taken place in Tottenham had spread to other parts of London. Worse was to come though as I soon learnt that not only that the rioting had spread but that it was affecting my own local neighbourhood. The original disturbance - because that was all it was - was a result of a few local Tottenham residents wanting answers from the police over the shooting of Mark Duggan, a man under surveillance by Operation Trident, the police unit tasked with fighting black on black violence. The frustration of a few of Duggan’s ... more

Lets not mess about guys; this was not a race riot but a riot started by one particular race and finished by many. Black youth did not attack white or Asian but joined together in mindless facebook mayhem. Its 30 years to the day Thatcher deliberately flared it up in Britain’s disconnected black community and here we are again, the trouble sparking in the same ghettos by the sons and daughters of, young black men targeting the police and the ‘man’. The only possible race element was the rioters tended to hit Asian and Middle Eastern businesses disproportionately in Tottenham, that the other ... more

I write this now as the proverbial and literal dust has completely settled over the England riots that held media and public attention from 6th to 10th August 2011. There is a reason for this. We are now past a time where the causes of these incidents and recriminations for those involved were being debated. What once felt like Armageddon has now become a small piece of violent history. We can now reflect without the knee-jerk reactions shaped by prejudices about the deterioration and decimation of society. Like the riots themselves, news on this event seemed to spread like a virulent disease ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Easy to make worse.

What do I think about the recent riots? Frankly I am disgusted by the attitudes taken by many people who were directly involved and those apologists who thought to excuse them. What started it? Well, possibly the trigger point was the peaceful protest about a young man who was shot and killed by police. It is alleged that this man was some form of "gangsta" as a loaded weapon, unregistered, was found at the scene following his death. There may have been some grounds for his friends and relatives to have a protest. After all he was doing nothing wrong! But then it appears that certain other ... more

Edit - apologies for the lack of consistent formatting - my laptop is running *really* slow and keeps almost crashing if I try to scroll too fast through the review to add extra returns to space the sections correctly - it was giving me a headache, so I'm leaving it for now :-/ - Introduction/Before I begin - Let me start off by saying that I've been quite vocal about my thoughts following the news this week. Being on holiday, I've watched alot of news coverage and debate and I feel quite strongly about my views on this subject and I spent some time discussing this to my parents, as well as on ... more
