Pedigree Perfumes come and go. Many these days in bottles far more interesting than their contents. And manufacturers try and think up more and more marketing gimmicks. But, nearly 40 years on from its invention, Rive Gauche is still going strong.
The Name Rive Gauche, which means "Left Bank" in French, was created a few years after the student demonstrations and riots in Paris, and Paris's Left bank has always been associated with artistic types, chic intellectuals, youth with a passion for politics and romance. So- the name was of its time.
The Scent
What's really nice about Rive Gauche is the fact it is a fresh, uniquely floral fragrance with top notes of bergamot, ylang ylang and freesia. With hints, also, of rose and jasmine. It is not "in you face" hasn't got that horrid chemical scent you get from more modern perfumes, and it;s timeless.
The Packaging
Still the distinctive blue, silver and black atomisateur - exactly the same as it was in 1971.
The price Compared to other designer perfumes, it is relatively cheap. Around £32 for a medium-sized eau de toilette . On the internet, on sites like Amazon and eBay, much cheaper. Around £11.00
Why I Wear It
Over the years I have tried many scents but I always come back to Rive Gauche, especially in the summer. as a young studnet in 1977, I thought it the ultimate in chic. It still smells great, although for evening wear I would probably switch to YSL's other classic, Opium. But that's another story.
