Review of "Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat (Radiant Touch)"
The Touche Éclat is in the shape of a thick felt tip pen, about six inches long and a centimetre in diameter. The casing is metal and gold in colour which immediately gives it a very expensive feel and reassures the buyer that although they may have paid £20 or more, their money has been well spent. When the cap is removed it reveals a soft brush that is used to apply the product stored within the “pen” like casing. The liquid concealer is released by clicking the button at the base of the pen until it emerges through the brush. This very clever packaging means that not only does the Touche Éclat look appealing, its slim-line design is perfect for slipping into a handbag, it will not spill, and there is no need for extra applicators to be carried.
The actual product is incredibly lightweight and rather than using pigment to cover dark circles, relies on light reflective particles. For this reason, the Touche Éclat comes in one standard colour that suits all. When applied, the product gives the skin an incredible radiance and youthful appearance. Also, a little goes a very long way-only one to two clicks of the “pen” are needed per application, so it does last a long time.
I am fair skinned with a rosy complexion and have been using Touche Éclat for five years now. This product really does give a fresh, dewy, youthful glow to skin. It need not be restricted to being used just under the eyes, in fact when I am hung over, I quite literally paint my face with it, as I would a foundation and the results really are amazing.
Although I would certainly recommend it, this product is not a replacement for concealer. Touche Éclat cannot be used to cover spots. As I said before, it contains very little pigment and as a result it struggles to hide the redness and I do not think it is thick enough to provide any coverage, especially when the spots are oily. As well as this, I have found that the light reflective particles only serve to highlight the problem, drawing attention to them.
As for covering dark under-eye circles, which is its original purpose, I think it does this well. Unlike many thick, heavy under eye concealers, it is light enough to hardly crease and does not look caked. However, if you suffer from very heavy dark circles, as I do, then you will find that it lessens their effect, but does not hide them totally. In order to overcome this, you could try doing what I do, which is to put on your normal under eye make-up, and then applying a coat of Touche Éclat on top to achieve a radiant, more delicate look than just using concealer. This, for me, gives the best of both worlds: coverage and a soft, fresh, radiant look.
I must offer a further warning- being rosy cheeked, I cannot use this product without applying a full face of foundation as otherwise I get an “inverse panda” look. I have seen other friends who do not have my high colouring wear it and it can be worn on its own and not look unnatural. However, be careful as if you are just wearing it without foundation, certain lights and even camera flashes can mean that the area of application stands out as being whiter, or brighter than the rest of your face, and experience has taught mew that this is not a good look!
One further comment is that the brush and the cap of the product need to be washed regularly to prevent them from smelling. The bacteria on your skin can manifest in the brush and cap and this does cause the product to smell less then appealing- it has happened to both myself, my mother and my friends and when we took them to the counter from which we bought them, this was the course of action recommended to us and it seemed to work.
I would certainly recommend Touche Éclat, but do not expect it to be a miracle cure for under-eye dark circles. This product is unique and I have never found anything else on the market that can give such wonderful luminescence without containing shiny, metalic or pearlised particles. It works very well as a highlighter- I often use it on cheekbones and find that it gives a much more natural look than Lancôme’s Maquisuperbe and such products which tend to leave a rather robotic metal sheen. Also use a few clicks mixed with your regular foundation to give a radiant look. Many more products in similar style packaging have come onto the market at a much cheaper price, for example Ruby and Mille, and Marks and Spencer’s even have brought out their “Perfect Complexion” concealer. While the packaging and application is practically the same as that of Touche Éclat, I must warn you that the product within is very different.
