The idea of personal 5.1 headphones is brilliant. Today's computers are perfectly capable of producing 5.1 or more of discrete audio channels for perfect surround experience. To pair that up, the top games offer 5.1 audio capabilities which enrich the game experience ten fold.

The Zalman 5.1 headphones offer 5.1 audio capabilities in a compact package. This is perfect for PC gaming and DVD movies.

The design of the headphones is superb, with a very futuristic look. The headphones can be folded inward, which is a bonus if you wanted to carry it with you, say for a LAN party or to play a game in your local cyber café.

The headphones have 3 separate pieces of small speakers inside the earpiece, which produce the required discrete audio signals for front, rear and centre channels. Three 3.5mm jacks connect the headphones to your audio card's front, rear and centre audio output sockets.

I tested the headphones with my favourite PC games, Counter strike source and Half life - episode one. The surround function was indeed very nice, with real positional sound. Compared to a regular stereo headphone, this is much, much better. You gain an advantage here above your opponents, because you can sense more accurately the direction of the sounds you hear. This can be a real help to locate your enemies in online games.

DVD playback was OK except that the low frequency bass was not that great. My stereo headphone produces more deep bass than the Zalman 5.1 headphones. This maybe because Zalman had to fit 3 separate drivers inside each of the earpieces.

Who is this for?

• Gaming
This is a good headphone for playing games. Only problem is, it's heavy, and has no external volume control.

• Music
I wouldn't recommend this for anybody wanting to play music through this. Stereo headphones may be better.

• Movies
If it had deep bass, I would have no problems recommending this to watch DVD movies. Also remember that it's quite uncomfortable to wear this for long periods of time.
