We bought this direct thermal printer about a year and a half ago (2008) when we signed up for a postal service provided by Royalmail and the sofware that came with it required the use of a thermal printer and the Zebra LP 2844 came very highly recommended for printing the postal labels with bar codes.
When we first checked the prices from major retailers of this prices we thought the price was rather high between £200 - £350 for the petit thermal printer. So we did a search on the internet and we managed to get one from 'am LABELS' for under £200. Before making the purchase, i rang them to find out more about this printer and i got a very great service and since they offer a free next day delivery for this purchase, i thought it couldn't get better than this so i ordered it.
Setting this printer up was rather easy, even though the printer came with an installation disc, we downloaded one from the manufacturer's website since that provided a lot more options than the drivers on the disc. In all, it took about 15 minutes to complete the set up and installation including the test prints.
So far, we haven't had a single problem with this printer since we started using it and we've been using it nearly every day but i must add we do low volume printing which is what this printer is for. It is also ideal for producing addresses, product identification and direct mail labels.
According to the manufacturer the print speed is up to 102mm per second but for us, most of our print outs has always been next to instant once the print command is issued.
Using the printer for more than a year with no problems, i would recommend it.
The one thing that didn't come with our printer was either a USB or Parallel interface cable so had to buy one as an option which sells between £2 and £5.
Also, the price of the printer seemed to have crept up a bit over the past year.
