My husband never used to be able to light the fire, but now he uses firelighters he never has a problem.
I generally break the firelighters so that I have four pieces and then dot them around the bottom of the woodburner. I then criss-cross plenty of kindling on top of them. My mum can light any fire with just a match apparantly, but some of us need a little more than that. I never used to be able to light a fire until I discovered firelighters.

I have a multi-fuel woodburner which means that it takes coal and wood. The easiest way that I have found to light this is with plenty of firelighters and plenty of kindling. We do not have central heating in our old cottage so we need to light the fire a lot.

I then light the firelighters and put some coal on top of the kindling, enough to catch fire, but not enough to swamp the fire. Once the coal is well alight, I put more coal on and shut the fire in.
My friend works in Jewsons and brings us home huge bags of offcuts of wood which we use as lightings.
Anyway, back to the actual product. These come in a box of 24 bits. You can use as much or as little as you like. They are packaged in a clear plastic wrapper inside the box. just break off what you need to use each time.
The firelighters light immediately at just the merest touch of a lit match and they flare and burn for absolutely ages which gives your fire best chance of starting and catching so that it keeps going.
The firelighters contain kerosene and so they do make your hands smell, but by the time you have handled the coal as well you need to wash your hands anyway!
you can now buy them in clear wrappers as well, individually wrapped, but I personally still think that the smell comes through the wrapper. These are also dearer of course and cost £1.85 for 16 pieces.
Apparantly the firelighter was invented in1936. Thank god I say as I would not be able to light the fire without it!

MY OPINION ++++++++++
I would recommend these. you can buy cheap firelighters from cheap shops, but they never light so well or burn for so long, so it is really worth paying that little bit extra to get your fire going!
Advantages: Easy To Use Disadvantages: None Really
I started using Zip Firelighters in March of last year, when I moved into where I am now.
I was blessed with something I had always wished that I had.
I have a Wood Burner, which I use most evenings, I live in the Country, and the feel and smell from this is amazing, as weel as the sound of the crackling wood, and the glow it produces. Also good for a romantic evening (take my word for it), with a nice bottle of wine. Goes down really well.
I ... ...and she recommended using these Zip lighters. I had never even seen them before. In the summer months when lighting the barbeque I always use barbeque coals.
Off on my next shopping trip I spotted these in the cleaning equipment aisle, and purchased a box (only bought one to start off with to make sure I could get along with them), now I have not looked back and use them every lightable fire that I have.
They come in a small square black based ...

Advantages: It's just a firelighter Disadvantages: Does not light as easily as their previous product
I have been using firelighters for many years and for most of them I think they have been Zip, because I am not conscious of any other brands being about. They used to be plain white and worked perfectly. They seem to have changed within the last year to an off-white colour with grey/black bits in, which despite Zip's claims, is much harder to light - at least with a match. At the same time the pack size available seems to have been reduced and I ... ...the pack is marked "Original" in large letters: I am not certain whether the previous type was also "original" or whether this is a step backwards - in two senses.
If I can find the previous quality I shall certainly go back to it and I am actively looking for a competitor's firelighter. ...

Advantages: Clean to use Disadvantages: The wrapper is very difficult to ignite, and the fire is therefore slow to start
...absolutely correct ! The ZIP firelighters were previously a pure white colour, but are now grey, and are flecked with small black bits. They do NOT light as well as the Originals (for which the packets were marked GB). The current packets are Marked UK.
The point of manufacture is not absolutely clear, as to whether produced in Leatherhead (Surrey), or in Ireland (Castle Bellingham)
Initially, with the revised brand, my wife almost needed something ... ...would like an explanation from ZIP !! Is it some 'Euro' initiative which the Company has to comply with, or UK Health & Safety legislation, so they are 'safe' in the Home, or are they simply of inferior manufacture ???
It is time the 'ORIGINALS' were produced again !!!! ...
