    Advantages Advantages usually very reliable

Disadvantages Disadvantages They can fail sometimes. not something everybody will want.

I have been a smoker for many years and one thing that a smoker needs is a means of setting fire to his tobacco product. This may mean that I may not have the best 'Green' credentials, but I do not like disposable lighters. Whilst each may only have a small amount of materials in them overall they do represent quite a large investment of resources in their manufacture and eventual disposal. I much prefer a lighter that can be reused. I tend not to like the gas powered ones, though I do still have one in the shape of a mauser pistol. (well I would wouldn't I) But there is one particular style ... more

ZIPPO The greatest windproof designed lighter I have ever owned in my entire lifetime. Forget about your throw away lighters that work a couple of times then die on you. I know it can be an initial cost to yourself to fork out on buying a Zippo lighter but trust me it will last a lifetime. Prices vary in Zippo lighters from £15 to £2000 upward that is if you want a classic 18 carat gold lighter. In 1932 George G. Blaisdell decided to make a lighter that would be easy to use and look smart. First he had to acquire the rights for an Austrian windproof lighter with a detachable top, he then re ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy to use. Attractive, timeless design. Inexpensive.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Not a lot.

~ ~ One of the mad cabbie’s favourite and most pleasurable pastimes is rolling up one of his wee “smokey joes”. (my daughter’s pet name for my roll-up cigarettes) OK, OK, I know that it’s a filthy habit, and bad for your health, but I think I’m entitled to do one thing in my life without a safety net! Cigarettes have to be lit to be effective in giving you a nicotine hit, and my cigarette lighter of choice right throughout my life has been a Zippo lighter. I hate matches, as they leave you with that horrible taste of sulphur in your mouth. Likewise, I resent ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages The petrol evaporates quite quickly

During the mid eighties my brother in law was in the Royal Navy and when he came home on leave he often brought with him a little souvenir, particularly if it was a leave which was his last on his current ship. It was during those leaves whilst the two of us solved world problems over a few beers that I first encountered the Zippo lighter. You see the ships each had a Zippo lighter with their design emblazoned across the lighters front face. The first I was to see was one with that Special K K on the front, this was from HMS Kellington which I believe was a Special Minesweeper used during the ... more

Advantages Advantages Windproof, cool, unique, comes with a lifetime guarantee, relatively cheap.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Re-fuelling is slightly harder than a conventional lighter.

Expensive. impractical, smelly, old-fashioned and hard to use. These are just a few of the adjectives which spring to the minds of most people when the think of Zippo lighters - hopefully by the end of this review they will not spring to yours. Most Zippos nowadays are relatively inexpensive with the average price now being around £15-20. For your money you not only get a fantastic piece of craftsmanship but in the unlikely event of your Zippo failing on you you are also entered into the world-famous Zippo lifetime guarantee. This guarantee covers all repairs made to your Zippo regardless of ... more
