ZIPPO The greatest windproof designed lighter I have ever owned in my entire lifetime.
Forget about your throw away lighters that work a couple of times then die on you.
I know it can be an initial cost to yourself to fork out on buying a Zippo lighter but trust me it will last a lifetime.
Prices vary in Zippo lighters from £15 to £2000 upward that is if you want a classic 18 carat gold lighter.
In 1932 George G. Blaisdell decided to make a lighter that would be easy to use and look smart.
First he had to acquire the rights for an Austrian windproof lighter with a detachable top, he then re-designed it in a way that was more appealing to him and to the customers that bought the lighter.
After he had re-designed and named the lighter ZIPPO he put a lifetime guaranteed on it.
The Zippo company is still owned by younger generations of George Blaisdells family.
When you purchase a Zippo lighter you will see that there are markings on the bottom of your Zippo lighter case. The markings are there for a purpose they are there to identify what month and year your Zippo lighter was made. This information is used in the case of a repair being needed.
There is also a club of Zippo lighter enthusiasts which the collectors can exchange, buy or swap lighters for a certain year of manufacture or a certain design etc.
Zippo lighters are usually a rectangular box design with a hinged lid. When you open the lid you will see that the removable lighter is inside. There is a wheel that you just flick quickly with your thumb to ignite it.
The lighter inside is removable so that you can replace the flint/wick and refill it with fuel.
The Flints cost £2.99 for a pack of 3 flint dispensers each containing 6 flints. These should last you 12 months or longer depending how often you use your Zippo lighter.
To replace the flint you take the lighter out of its case, on the bottom of the lighter you will see a screw, undo the screw and you will see it is attached to a spring, gently tap your lighter just to check that any of the old flint is not stuck inside. Put your new flint in the hole where the spring was and then replace the spring and screw it back in place.
Wicks cost £2.99 for a pack of 3. To replace the flint take the lighter from inside of its case and unscrew the screw with the spring at the bottom of the lighter. Remove felt pad at the bottom of the lighter and all of the other packing. Put your new wick down through chimney on top of the lighter and pull it down. Put the packing back, whilst intermingling the wick between it. Pop back the felt pad and then the spring screw and your sorted.
Filling your lighter with fuel Take the lighter out of its case lift up the pad at the bottom of the lighter and soak the underneath packing with the fuel. Replace the lighter in its case.
As I have already said Zippo lighters come with a lifetime guarantee if your lighter breaks Zippo will repair it free of charge.
They replace the inside of the lighter with a new one of the current year. They also repair the hinge on the outside case if it has become damaged. They will not however guarantee the finish of your lighter. If your lighter is damaged beyond repair it will be replaced.
When or if you send your lighter of to be repaired put it in a padded envelope enclosing your name, address, and telephone number. To send the lighter off remove the flint and let the fuel dry out before posting.

Do Zippo live up to their lifetime guarantee promise?
Yes they do more than that they are very kind and courteous.
I had my first Zippo lighter in 1980 given to me as a gift from my father. That lighter was used for 23 years without a problem then in February this year the hinge broke on the case, I was really upset as I loved and trusted my Zippo lighter.
My father went out the very next day and bought me a new Zippo lighter he paid £27 it is brass with my initials engraved on it.
I was over the moon, but still upset that my old faithful was broke, I read the guarantee that came with the new lighter and there I saw about a lifetime guarantee. So I thought to myself yes, I will post my old 23-year-old lighter off and see what happens. (Don’t forget only the hinge was broken)
The postage only cost me 60p and within 4 weeks I had my old lighter back. The hinge on the case was repaired and they had put a whole new inside in it. They even sent my old inside back even though that wasn’t broken.
How is that for service? I was really pleased so I sent them a short thank you letter for their quick service and excellent repair.
Two weeks after that they were even good enough to send me back a reply saying that it was not often that people took the time to write back to them and compliment them on their free repair service, they said when they do receive a thank you letter it makes their day complete. They also said take advantage of their free repair service anytime that is needed.
See what a little thanks can do, I am sure if more people did take the time to thank people our world would be a more efficient, more enjoyable place to be in.
