INTRODUCTION It's Saturday morning and I'm bored with nothing to do. I've got plenty of computer games but I'm bored of them all at the moment, so I decide to download a game. Logging onto Big Fish Games, a site I often browse on, I spot a game called "Zoo Vet". I have Zoo Tycoon and like that so I decided to give it a try. The game is $20 to buy the full version, or you can download a trial version for one hour. The trial version is the full game but after an hour you can no longer play it, it closes and asks you to order to continue playing. To download the game, visit this link: http://www.bigfishgames.com/download-games/694/zoovet/index.html or here: http://www.arcadetown.com/zoovet/game.asp The publisher of Zoo Vet is Legacy Interactive and this game was released in 2004.
System Requirements: OS: Windows ME/2000/XP/VISTA CPU: 600MHz or faster Processor RAM: 128 MB
PLAYING THE GAME The idea of Zoo Vet is to diagnose sick or injured animals inside a zoo, by going through the entire process of diagnosis, treatment and cure. There are various tools you can use to do this and there are also characters which can help you. When you first open the game you are introduced to three characters. These are Zookeepers which you will meet throughout the game. You are then taken to your first scenario and introduced to the patient box. There is a big window showing the sick animal and underneath it is a menu showing all the diagnosis tools. You get scored at the end of the scenario on the choices you make and whether or not you treat the animal correctly. If you get a score of 100% then you get a nice shiny trophy! There are 25 different zoo animals to diagnose and there is a large variety of animals, from hippos to penguins etc, just like you'd expect from a real zoo. There are 30 different scenarios which can be replayed to try and beat your previous score.
The first thing you must do is ask the zookeepers questions that will help diagnose what is wrong with the animal. You get a choice of questions, some of them will not help you and some will so you have to chose wisely! The questions are things like 'when did the animal last eat?' You can zoom in on the picture of the animal using the tools to test, diagnose and cure the animal.
There are a couple of squeamish moments. On a few of the scenarios, you will have to examine the animal poo! Luckily you don't have to look at it at any length but it's still something that could have been left out the game. You also see a lot of open wounds, the images aren't bloody though so it isn't too bad.
GRAPHICS & SOUND The three zookeepers you see when you first open the game look poorly designed, their faces look quite strange actually, not very good for a modern game! Although as you are actually playing the game the graphics look a lot better. The animals you see look very lifelike at times when in fact they are drawings. The music is ok, very simple though. The zookeepers speak to you during the game, there are no animal noises at all however which is strange considering it's a game based on animals!
HOW DOES IT COMPARE TO SIMILAR GAMES? As far as I know, there isn't another game quite like this one. So in that way it is fairly unique which is always a good thing. There are 'Zoo' themed games about though such as Zoo Tycoon but the fact they are both set in a zoo is really where the similarity ends.
OVERALL IMPRESSION Animal lovers would like this, especially children. It's quite an educational game so it's a good game for children to learn with. Those who wish to become a vet one day will love it as they will be able to see a step-by-step guide on how to cure animals. For me the playability wasn't very long because after I'd treated a few animals I became bored as a few of the scenarios were similar. Also, I nearly managed to complete the whole game in an hour! Taking into consideration the playability, content of the game and the design of it I think the price is a little high.
Why isn't the lion eating? What do you do with a newborn flamingo? What does the x-ray of the panda's belly show? Players can answer all of these questions and plenty more when they become a vet at their own zoo. Zoo Vet is aimed at simulation game fans and animal lovers, aged 8 and above. The game introduces players to life at the zoo and gives them the ability to care for a diverse group of animals while interacting with entertaining characters. Being a zoo vet is an adventurous and exciting job! Players travel around the zoo performing examinations on cuddly otters and dangerous lions. They gather vital facts about each animal by talking with the zookeepers and team up with vet techs to investigate the animals' ailments. In an emergency, the players jump in with their treatment tools and rescue the animals from harmful conditions. The players can also take advantage of the features in their office, such as learning about careers with animals and unlocking bonus features as they progress through the game.
