Manufacturer's product description
The Zoom ADSL USB Modem Model 5510A connects your Windows computer to standard ADSL service to provide a high-speed "always on" connection to the Internet. The Model 5510A connects easily to any Windows 98, 98SE, 2000, ME, or XP computer with an available USB port. Then simply plug into any phone jack with ADSL service, run the software wizard provided and you're ready for instant access to the Internet! The Model 5510A delivers up to 8 Mbps data speeds over existing telephone wires in a home or office. All popular ADSL standards are supported, including Full Rate ANSI T1.413 Issue 2, G.DMT ITU G.992.1 and Splitterless G.Lite ITU G.992.2. A Point-to-Point protocol (PPP) stack is built into the Model 5510A, which eliminates the need for PPP client software on your computer and improves system stability. The installation wizard software is pre-configured for many service providers. Just select from a list of DSL providers and the installation wizard automatically configures the network settings. If a provider is not listed, the installation wizard makes it easy to enter the settings for your ADSL service.

Advantages: none Disadvantages: doesn't work - drivers unsuitable for win2000 and xp
...Bought this modem well over a year ago now - it has long since been replaced by an alcatel model (which works perfectly)
I initially bought this model cheaply with filters and software disk so I assumed that there would be no problems with the install - as it was USB and i had the appropriate software if required.
Win XP one of my operating systems first complained about incompatibility - this however is commonplace (the box and instructions told me that it was XP compatible so I proceeded with install) and initially there were no real problems.
However, after restarting the computer sometimes the modem would not be recognised and I would have to reinstall the software and sometimes the OS just crashed to bluescreen
I contacted customer support for a new more compatible driver - but no such luck.
The same situation occurred on my...

Advantages: small, cheap, fast Disadvantages: gets hot, not as cheap as USB only modems
...So this is the device needed to get the ADSL line working but how well does it work?
Appearance
=
The first thing I noticed about this model is the colour of it. Its silver and this gives it a modern appeal. Its small and rather thin. It is only 2.8cm x 17.5cm x 11.8cm so makes it a compact modem.
It is also light and weights in at 600 grams. When the modem is switched on, it has yello LEDs that light up to show if the power is on, USB, ethernet and if the ADSL line is there.
System Requirements
* ADSL Internet service from BT and your chosen ISP. I use Nildram.
* Ethernet (netowrk) or USB connection on your PC
* Windows 95, 98, Me, NT, 2000, XP, Mac
* Internet Explorer 5.0 or Netscape 4.7 or better - Tthis is so you can access the configuration menu.
Box Contents
* DM602 ADSLModem (single...

Advantages: Small and light weight, with a nice design Disadvantages: Gets quite warm when it has been running for amounts of time
...Firstly, this is the first and only modem I have owned and it was purchased in 2004.
The Voyage 105 has a small light weight design which makes it suitable for the smaller deskspaces, it also has a useful feature of a retractable stand to stand the modem vertically. The modem itself is very simple with only two sockets and three green LED lights. The three LEDs indicate the power, DSL and that data is being recieved. Even though there is nine slots for air movement, the modem still becomes quite warm after it has been running for amounts of time. Unfortunately I have not found a soloution for this heating up.
Overall the BT Voyager 105 is a simple but reliable ADSLmodem which comes at a very competetive price.
I would recomend this modem for a freqently used internet service....

When I first heard of this product, I really wasn't convinced. First of all Netgear's claim that it can operate at 270mb which is more than 2 times that of a standard home/office 10/100mb network and a good deal more than my old 54g (30mb+/-) router's... more
