It has a large range of sounds made up of thirty factory preset ones and thirty user programmable ones.
There is a built in tuner, a built in drum machine, and a large integrated foot-pedal for those squawky wah-wah moments.
What does all this mean in real life?
Well, costs vary. I've seen it for £129.95 at musicianshop.com, £119.00 at regentguitars.co.uk, and a there's a multi-effects version called a GFX-707 II which is available at electrohill.co.uk for £119.95.
Years ago, that sort of money used to buy one Boss effects pedal with, say, distortion on it. Then if you wanted other pedals like reverb, delay, chorus and flange, these would have to be daisy-chained together with lots of little cables - a messy solution with lots of things to go wrong.
This one pedal can basically do what a floor filled with those earler effects pedals can do, plus it can be a drummer, and it can help tune your guitar. This makes it a lot of effects pedal for the money.
Is there anything I don't like about it? Yes there is...
The old Boss type pedals did the very little they could do very efficiently and had very easy to twiddle knobs and parameters plus a pedal to push with your foot.
That was it.
They were very easy to work and the sound they gave was phenomenal. I used to use my delay pedal for guitar live for vocals and you could get plenty or bathroom or cathedral-like echo.
It sounded nice.
You couldn't do that with a Zoom GFX-707. I tried. This is purely a guitar pedal and it won't do what it isn't supposed to do.
So, how well does it perform?
Quite a good range of effects are available although some of the factory settings tend to be quite odd cholces that you'd probably not want to use. The acoustic guitar setting is quite nice and there are a number of distortions to choose from so you should be able to find one you like.
But what if you can't?
Well, there are a lot of slots available for user-programmable sounds and for inspiration you will find that there are many users of this pedal out there in cyberspace who have conveniently done a lot of the work for you. Try curvedspaces.com who have a free database of downloadable settings which will provide you with lots of new possibilities.
Copy the settings they've given in their tables into your pedal and see if you can find the ideal sounds to suit your style of playing.
There are always newer and better pedals available so it's hard to keep up with the very latest which may well have even more spectacular functions. Still, this is a good, versatile pedal, and definitely a good buy.
