Once upon a time (5 years ago), I was trawling the insurance companies looking for the best bang for my buck on car insurance. I stumbled across a company called Eagle Star Direct, and we in love. Eagle star was the perfect company for me; they gave me good deals, low cost and a ground-breaking policy which other could not live up to without added cost.
My relationship with Eagle star remained strong, seeing me through a complicated claim (involving a fool with no insurance) and other queries. We remained lovers and, even when they were no longer the cheapest, I stuck by them, knowing that customer care and a strong policy with extras was there for me.

I even had my house insurance with my beloved Eagle Star but, alas, Zurich drove me away, with me vowing never to return.

Bottom line is that my annual premium on the car insurance jumped to £840. Within 5 minutes, on T’Internet, I had obtained a better quote. Only a few quid difference…£460! (with Esure). That is a whole lotta money and a better more user-definable policy to boot. So what is with Zurich?
Price aside, the complications that I went through with them during renewal in March 2004 were appalling. They state that they can be called 24x7, 365 days a year. The trouble is that out of office hours, you get an offshore call centre. I have no issues with off shoring (my company does it to great successes), but hey.. Zurich, give the guys some decent training!. The person I spoke to made so many mistakes that I gave up (she even gave me the wrong number to call Monday morning). Even after I had paid the final instalment on my policy, they still stated that I needed to cough up some irrational figure. Mistakes can be made, but rudeness is unforgivable.
Even when I tried to extract my proof of no claims discount to hand over to the nice people at Esure, it took 4 (yes four) phone calls and 5 (yes five) weeks for them to eventually process. I eventually got through to a UK trained bloke, who was genuinely surprised at what I went through. He even stated that I could not afford to stay with Zurich and the policy was better than they could offer (honesty at last). As a parting gift, he sorted my no claims letter out and bid me farewell. I hope the Zurich bods listen to that “recorded for training purposes” call and use it for training purposes. 1 out of 6 people I spoke to knew what they were doing and sorted my problems out. But this is individual people giving good service, not the whole organisation.
Sorry to see you swallowed up Eagle Star, I will miss you and your great customer care, competitive prices and great service. As for Zurich, sort out the issues or you will see a lot more discerning folks like me going to the young upstarts in the insurance business.
Customers want customer care. Customer care=customers. When all the little people change their opinions, it will become a big problem.

This includes huge holding periods on the phone while contacting a representative, and too many requests once a collision has occured. One month later my brother, who was insured with Zurich, gets into an accident due to icy roads. Upon contacting Zurich, th wait on the phone lines is over 1 hour. The request by Zurich is that we take the car around (in its bad condition ... ...in regards to prices. Zurich did not aid in the process by referring us to anyone. We finally get the quotes and Zurich only accepts the lowest - there is no market research or input asked from us on who we think will actually do a better job to provide us the car that we had before - here the lowest price is the law and no concern exists with regards to who will do a better job!

The appeared in the UK market by default. They bought Eagle Star and took over their general businss and this gave them a massive foothold in the market. EagleStar always had a good name for covering car insurance as it was one of the few companies that would insure young drivers. Zurich has continued with this tradition.

...with Zurich, Eagle Star then Zurich again for both home insurance and car insurance since the mid 1990s. I claimed on my car insurance in 1997 when my car was written off after someone tried to steal it.. The service was excellent and the cheque arrived swiftly. I had a similar positive experience when I claimed on my home insurance for a leaking water tank (ceiling replastered and room redecorated) in 2003.
To say that they have gone downhill would ... ...highly objectionable but stuck with Zurich because of their past good service.

I chose Zurich purely on price, as they were £400 cheaper than the company I was with. Unfortunately I had my car stolen, after some 14 year old rascals broke into my house and stole my car keys.
Apart from being interrogated as to why I had my car stolen within a month of taking up the insurance, and finding out that I couldn't have a temporary replacement car whilst the car was still missing, (different if it was wrecked, awaiting repair) I was ... ...fashon.
However, the police turned out to be on the ball, and managed to come across the car. The occupants scarpered, still hanging onto my keys, but the car was still in reasonable condition.
The only claim I needed to make was the cost of picking up the car from the police pen to a recommended garage to have the locks replaced.
I was told, don't worry, you're covered. no Excess.

We have insured our office with ZurichInsurance North America for over 10 years. Last month there was a burglary in the building and we filed a claim for $2100 (Note, this is our first claim ever for our office). We received a letter 3 days later informing us that our policy was canceled due to risk previously not considered. Not only that, it's been a month since we submitted our claim and they still have not reviewed it. I will not be surprised if they do not pay out at all. On top of that, the adjustor I've been in contact with is very rude. After 10 years of insuring with them, they canceled our policy for a lousy $2100 claim. I am absolutely disgusted with the company and the service. We ahve insured with them twice now, the first time they stopped taking our payments out of the bank and we unwittingly drove for 6 months uninsured, this year they done the same but when we pulled them on the money that was not taken they have now demanded all the monthly payments that were due at once, which we do not have, The staff are unhelpful they just leave your wuery until you have to call them back a few weeks later to check that they have sorted it, and it turns out that they have not, the garage they use if your car breaks down are just as bad, they promised us a hire car by the time I finished work so I did not arrange a lift and was stranded miles away with no lift as they had not brought the car to us, no warning, I think the insurers are absolutely disgraceful ...
