The financial world at your fingertips

Advantages: A wealth of knowledge and tools
Disadvantages: Poor home page and daunting on first visit

The world of the financial markets is very a murky place. If you have no experience and no idea how they work then starting out can be a very daunting prospect indeed.

Sites like ADVanced Financial Network (ADVFN) are a great window into what for the uninitiated is virtually a foreign language. It won't make you money per-se but it ...
...so much information available on ADFVN that much research is going to be needed just to use the site. I will try to go through this review as simply as possible but the subject matter is so complicated and involved that I think this will be a mammoth task. Anyway here goes.

==The site itself==

ADVFN holds tools and research facilities to help investors make qualified decisions about a world of stocks and shares. Facts ... more

ADVFN Real Time for freeeee

Advantages: Free real tim prices
Disadvantages: Poor design and content, lack of editorial muscle.

I’ve been using ADVFN (Advanced Financial Networks) since the untimely demise of Ukinvest, which was by far and away my favourite site. It has taken a couple of weeks to get used to the look and feel of ADVFN, which I had used briefly in the past, but moved away from for reasons which have not changed. Read on. I should make it clear that I am strictly a pocket-money investor and because of this am not in a position to justify the cost of additional ...
...from a number of sites to check on prices and do my research – how much longer they can remain free is not known, but I suspect they will gradually disappear over the next couple of years. Back to ADVFN – The best feature on the site is by some way the real time streaming prices, to my knowledge this is the only site currently offering this functionality free. The reliability of this function does seem a bit suspect though. The links to company ...

Best site for price quotes

Advantages: Real time share prices
Disadvantages: Seems to have more downtime than its peers

and for detailed trades info. This site is always my first choice for price quotes because it gives real time prices for free. Other sites are normally 20 minute delay prices or real time only if you pay. From the price quotes page, there is a link to detailed trades info, to see all the trades done that day (also available at Hemscott, but I prefer ADVFN because the layout is better, including a split into buys and sells - note, however, that ...
...the best it can to 'guess' whether a trade is a buy or a sell by comparing the trade price with bid & offer prices). There is also a link to a chart facility, recent RNS announcements and recent bulletin board messages on the company. The bulletin boards are not such good quality as Motley Fool, but still welcome as additional information. ...

Prepare to be Impressed

Advantages: real time stock quotes, free, reliable
Disadvantages: for trading rather than research

ADVFN is the lynch pin of every online trader's portfolio. When I signed on to the site, my main focus was on the FREE REAL TIME QUOTES provided, but I have continued to be impressed by every aspect of their service. After a simple registration on their site, the free services which ADVFN offer include realtime quotes for single stocks, realtime monitors (which include bid/offer prices and the last price and volume of a share traded), share portfolios, ...
...is possible to upgrade the service for a small fee which gives further access onto premium bulletin boards and additional options in monitoring/charting mutiple sets of shares in realtime. Two extremely impressive features are the portfolio and monitoring systems. Like most site portfolios, one is able to create a number of portfolios. However where ADVFN streaks ahead is the completeness of the portfolio application. When entering a stock, you are ...

Real time heaven

Advantages: Real time prices and trades info
Disadvantages: not aesthetically pleasing, poor bulletin boards

ADVFN.com is yet another internet finance site, but of all the sites I have used for tracking my portfolio and plotting my next move, it's the one that gives me the data most efficiently. As with all websites of this type, ADVFN is made up of a number of elements, some premium, most free. I have heard that their premium services, such as Level 2 prices and premium bulletin boards, are extremely useful - subscribers swear they couldn't do without ...
...free areas, but for someone like me who likes to keep up to speed while not needing split-second timing for day trading and the like, ADVFN provides excellent and reliable data for nothing. My favourite part of the site is the "trades" section. This provides real time information, which updates itself every 2-3 minutes, of each and every trade in whichever stock you are studying. Can be extremely handy when timing trades, particularly if you're ...

one of the best

Advantages: free and reliable trades/quotes
Disadvantages: n/a

one of the best if not the best sites for basic info on trades and iniyial info on companies (fundementals section). the site provides 'real-time' stock quotes/trades which are updated every few minutes. the accuracy is excellent compared to some other sites i've used before and the layout of how to use the info available is easy and simple to follow. most of the services available are free but there is a premium service that you can subscribe to ...
...for day traders). the premium service i believe provides more detailed info about the trades (e.g. between market makers, delayed trades, etc) this level 2 data is available at £35 + vat per month (at the time of typing this note). all in all a very good site that is accessed for nothing. i like it so much that if it was customary to pay for those services in level 1 with other financial sites then i would have chosen advfn. the only slight criticism ...

TMF is very foolish

Advantages: great discussion boards
Disadvantages: not great overall

The motley fool is a financial website offering many services including discussion boards, quotes/data/afx news and the ability to create your own portfolio and track it. They also have a model portfolio which you can follow and use for investment ideas. I have never used TMF for quotes or data due to the fact that they have been having problems of late with this. It seems to be working now but there are far better websites for this information anyway especially www.advfn.com. I use The Motley Fool mainly for its discussion Boards. I would say overall it's not the best financial site but for discussion it is superb. If you are into short term trading the 'Day Traders Den' is great for getting ideas on short term share fluctuations. Also there is a board for nearly every stock on the LSE. These boards tend to be fairly active ...

Extemely useful

Advantages: Everything
Disadvantages: £10 for the newsletter, but nothing this good could be free

I initially visited sharelineuk.co.uk after reading a review on a certain other opinion website. There was only one opinion and the author sounded very impressed. Sharelineuk.co.uk is owned by the Halpin Group and was launched in February 2000. Their aim is to provide tips, news and information on all of the shares that they believe will gain in value. Examples of their top tips from last year as listed on the website are, April 1999 - Amstrad, which went from 50p to 450p November 1999 - Gladstone, which went from 9p to 60p November 1999 - Knowledge Man, which went from 150p to 1350p March 2000 - ADVFN.Com, which went from 10p to 57.5p Their categories include, recommendations, tip of the week, a newsletter (£10), new issues and takeover bids. All of this information is kept up to date and is extremely useful for the new ...

A hidden cost advantage

Advantages: Superior executed prices
Disadvantages: None

is already very small or for very illiquid stocks). This is more important than differences in commission from one broker to another. When comparing trades (e.g. as shown on ADVFN.com), I know that the prices at which my trades were executed is about as good as anybody can get. For example, the quote was 90p bid, 95p offer, but I bought at 94p, and I can see that other people who bought while the quote was 90-95p paid either 94 or 94.5 or 95p. This difference is more important than than tiny differences in commission rates, and it is an aspect which never seems to be discussed in comparisons between brokers. ...
