You know I only joined up here on a bet, Y´all know I´m a dooyoo writer first don´t you?, well I bet you want to know what the bet was all about don´t you?, No?, well tough, I´m telling you anyway!
It was one night sat in a dooyoo chat-room, a prominent dooyoo writer started bragging that they could pick out any dooyoo writer on a different site just by their writing style, well I´m always one to shoot down claims like that, so I set down the challenge - I´d join another pay-for-write site, use a different name, write one opinion and leave it (obviously I´ve ended up writing a few more but still thats a whole other opinion). Well I needed a new e-mail address to provide my anonymity, and after hearing a few good things it was time to visit another.com (well okay, one good thing - they had a free £5 amazon voucher if you signed up with them).
On first visiting the site one thing became clearly obvious - another obviously like their adverts,
they are literally all over the place, but still its an online company offering free vouchers, so an advert here or there doesn´t hurt that much, anyway signing up was a doddle, they asked all the usual questions (Name, address, age, etc), and I gave the usual answers (Mr F.Ake-Name, 1 Not-real street, no-town, 1.1.1., etc), and it all slipped through the net - I could choose my user-name, easily done, I´d already decided on the ciao name so I went for the same again, and we were in.
Now then, as I´m sure we all know the big attraction of another.com to most people is the fact that you can pick from thousands of daft domain names, this is one function I have since taken advantage of - basically you type in a rough idea of what kind of domain name you want, in my case I wanted one to change all my Grimsby Town Football Club mailing lists to so typing in Grimsby Town returned the domain `ilovegrimsbytown.co.uk´ - perfect!, a couple of button clicks later and I had a specific address at the above domain name.
But as a general e-mail provider, how good is it?, well its a teensie bit below average, at least once a month you´ll find that another.com will leave you a message informing you that the site will be going down for maintenance work and this is usually 6 hours a time, however when the site re-opens you´ll find that nothings changed, they may have added an advert here or there but that´ll be it, second gripe - if you´re e-mailing to an obscure address then its picky, sometimes it will re-bound, sometimes it won´t - there´s one that I e-mail to regularly and if I e-mail from my Yahoo address it´ll get there, but if I e-mail from my another account, well as mentioned above - its extremely tempremental, often refusing to admit that the address even exists.
Next complaint - send me an e-mail in HTML, go on I dare you, it won´t be easy for me to read though, as any HTML that gets sent to me is automatically classed as an attachment and hence means even more clicking before I can open it. Final whinge time - honest, there isn´t a trash-bin for mails you´ve deleted, now I´m a clumsy oaf when it comes to deleting e-mails, the most important of important e-mails always seem to get swept up in the junk I delete, and when there´s no trash-bin, I can never retrieve them, it wouldn´t be the first time I´ve been accused of ignoring people, when really their e-mails been caught up in a massive delete-a-thon.
Now then the good stuff!, there is some, honest, first off when sending e-mails to addresses that another likes you can be assured of a speedy delivery, and along with that, the whole site itself (when up and running), seems to be very quick, hop from one e-mail to your in-box in mere seconds (and thats good for NTL users), on top of this, you don't get any hassle if your inbox starts to fill up, current check theres over 100 e-mails in my inbox, and still no e-mail from another ordering me to delete some (one day I may do that anyway).
Spam then, do we get any?, not an iota, every e-mail sent to my address has been via direct interaction from myself, not one `sexy lawyer who´s quit her job in the city and become a porn-star'-style e-mail, which is a refreshing change after the joys of having a hotmail account. Finally, all e-mails are automatically saved in your sent folder, again this is a god-send for people like me, it wouldn´t be the first time that somebody´s claimed I said something to them in e-mail and I wouldn´t be able to remember, but now all I have to do is check it up in my sent e-mails folder and away we go.
So all-in-all, would I reccomend them?, well yes and no, the lack of spam is a welcome factor of the site, but the fact that there´s a tonne of down-time, tied in with the lack of a trash-bin and the reluctance to send to some addresses, does make it not *that* good a service, but if that kind of thing doesn´t bother you then go for it!
