Initially a free site, Another.com started to charge its customers in 2002. Most of us were more than satisfied with the service, so were happy to pay the small annual fee. For one thing, Another.com was not prone to the huge amount of spam mail that other web mail services suffered from. Also, it was well designed and the user had a wide choice of colour schemes
Another advantage of the service was the function that allowed multiple email addresses to go into a single inbox, a huge number of possible domain names to go after the 'yourname@' part of the email address. Up to 20 addresses can be registered by a single user, and they can be used either for novelty value or specific purposes - for instance 'my-office.co.uk', useful perhaps for a secondary work address, or 'pissoffco.uk' for a more direct message!
However, within a few years things downhill. The annual fee was increased at least twice, and there were a number of technical hitches. When a bigger firm bought the company, there were hopes that the decline would halt and Another.com would be the great service it once was. At first, there were no noticeable differences. A banner then appeared on the login page promising "a sparking new Another.com". Well over a year later, the re-launch has yet to occur, and the same promise still appears on the site.
The next time my subscription needed renewing (in 2007), I was told that they did not accept onlinepayments - has anyone heard of any other email company that do not accept online payments? The only accepted payment was by cheque! The site has become seemingly moribund, so I decided to let my subscription lapse the next time it need renewing. No doubt there are many other another.com accounts that have gone the same way.
