Advantages: Free and easy to use. Disadvantages: Very basic
Loot auctions, like the Loot classified service is completely free and this makes it an attractive place to look for bargains.
I had been looking for something particular for some time and was pleased when a 'search' at loot revealed one.
The searching is not bad - though there is no 'advanced' alternative as per most sites these days.
I clicked on the more info button of the item I was interested to be taken to the 'description' page. This page ... ...somewhat 'basic'). The seller had not used the page to it's full advantage and had not described his item in any detail - and there was no way of contacting them - very annoying.
To bid you click on another button and get taken to a bid screen. The current bidding was low enough that I was happy to take a risk so I placed a bid. This is easy enough.
And this is where the nightmare began....
I was informed by email that I had been outbid (which ...

The newspaper is priced at £1.30 which I think is not that bad, considering the fact it has things for sale that cover all these sections: - Household
- Sound and Vision - Home - On the road - Recruitment - Computers - Holidays - Leisure - Personal All the listed sections are well represented with good bargains that are for sale in your area. With over a hundred pages of item for sale I think it is well worth a look when you want to buy something. ... ...You can also cheack the website out
What I find good about the loot newspaper is that it covers adverts in your area hence you have a realistic chance of being able to look at what your are buying. You can place an advert for free in the newspaper so it comes in handy if you want to sell something, again a service used as I sold my old computer when I ought a new one. Your add is placed in the next edition of the newspaper and it is so easy to do. ...

Advantages: As a seller, some sale prices. Disadvantages: Charges.
...Register with QXL by all means, but also check out others. In UK, look at Freeserve Auctions (http://www.fsauctions.co.uk/), Yahoo Auctions (http://uk.auctions.yahoo.com/uk/), eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/) - don't forget Loot (http://www.loot.com/scripts/lootsite.dll).
For the prospective seller, the costs of selling are an important factor. In comparison to those mentioned, QXL listing charges and auction success charges are higher than Freeserve and Yahoo is free.
Of course, one should also browse for a while to determine what the selling prices are, for these do vary from auction to auction.
Presentation, ease of use and facilities offered are, to my mind, secondary to the financial aspects. Nevertheless, QXL falls behind the other auction sites in this area as well. Check out eBay and see the difference!
If you are a buyer only...
