I have used this free service for over two years now and have found it to be a marvelous service. It is very simple to use, with help and advice available at every stage. For searching for goods the site has two options. Either click through category listings until you get to the area of product you are interested in or use their search facility. I have found the search facility to be outstanding. Once you have placed your initial search you are given the option of searching within the search results to find exactly what you want. The advanced search options give even more exact results.
When purchasing goods from auctions, I have found the process very simple. You place your bid for the good and you are informed via email if you have been outbid or if you have won the auction in question. The seller then contacts you with payment details. One feature I especially like about this service is the Rating facility. This allows buyers and sellers to post comments about their experiences with each other for the entire public to see. If a buyer or seller is receiving continuous bad ratings, then a minus will appear next to the sellers or buyers name in their auctions, indicating how many bad rating that have been posted. Also, for those members who have received positive ratings, a number also appears next to their member name on auction pages, which will indicate how many good comments that person, has received.
The Selling process is simple and you can have an item up for sale in less than five minutes. The Auction pages you create for your sale item are highly configurable to your own requirements. You can change the layout and colour of your auction pages. This is all accomplished from a single web form within Yahoo! Auctions. You can also add up to three photographs of your product, with one of the pictures displayed at the top of search result pages when somebody is conducting a search.
UPDATE 04 JUNE 2002: It is a shame that the UK and Ireland version is closing down at the end of June 2002. Yahoo! UK and Ireland give no reason for this, which is very annoying to say the least. They are recommending members join Ebayin the UK instead. What a sad end to such a high quality service. The main US Yahoo! Auction site remains, but obviously is not based for UK domestic auctions.

Anthony - welcome to our 'little' community and this is a good start to your Ciao career. I've started using Yahoo auctions recently and find them pretty good and Free. Have you tried Amazon.co.uk ? Very user friendly and I'd regard them as superior to Yahoo. I'd also suggest you take a look because for sellers the site is more lively with more people buying. For example in the past 2 months I've sold 12 items on Yahoo and 18 on Amazon. Both are free to list items, just a bit of advice which might be profitable for you. Cheers

I use Yahoo! auctions to, I think it's really good and agree with what you have said. Excellent first opinion, congratualtions and welcome to ciao!
Advantages: Some excellent bargains to be had, easy to find things, FREE to list items. Disadvantages: As with all auctions, you have to be careful who you're buying from...
