MINOR CIAO WRITER IN BORING BACKGROUND BIT
As a child, I was always interested in the news. I became interested in Soviet politics in 1980 after watching the Moscow Olympics. This led to me studying Russian at University. I stood as a candidate in the school mock general election in Sixth Form. I didn’t have much chance of winning, standing as a left wing candidate in a right-wing Lincolnshire, populated by loads of farmers and RAF personnel. ... ...University in 1988 meant I had a good excuse to follow the news, as part of my course was Soviet politics! I also became interested in local and national issues, usually involving an anti-Tory demo and the occasional sit-in! Now I am older, have less free time to march or demonstrate, I have four children to look after and other issues have taken priority. I am no longer as overtly political as I used to be. I am more likely to shout at the telly ...

Advantages: Great content Disadvantages: None really
...The people behind the bbc.co.uk website certainly know what they are doing and have put together an excellent route into the Beeb's entire stock of treasures.
For instance, I checked out the section relating to the recent BBC2 comedy show, The Office http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/theoffice and got video clips from all the shows plus wallpaper pics and a beautiful depiction of a truly wonderful comedy creation and that's typical of the site's approach. ... ...life of the British people and they have successfully marked their entrance to the Online medium.
You could do an awful lot worse than marking this particular site down as being your own personal homepage because it represents a truly remarkable entrance to the amazing world of Internet browsing. ...

Advantages: Lots of international and UK news, in depth information, chance to comment, links to many other sites Disadvantages: Easy to spend too many hours there
I hardly ever watch television, and we only buy a newspaper occasionally. I do listen to the radio, sometimes, but hearing similar news every hour can get repetitive. So I've found that, for me, the best way to keep abreast with current affairs and world events is to access the BBC site regularly. * Main page layout *
The site - http://news.bbc.co.uk - looks smart and professional without being flashy. At the top is a brown bar including a site ... ...news. In the centre of the page is a table of small sections with photographs and summaries of the latest UK and world headlines. Next to them are text links to other top or recent stories. Any of these can be clicked to find out more. Looking at it now (23rd October 2003, mid-afternoon) I see that the main stories are about the British Tory leader, the UN secretary asking for help in rebuilding Iraq, and a British woman found guilty of running a ...

Newsround was first screened on 4th April 1972, in a desperate bid by the BBC to make more children watch the news. Children found the news boring, dull and something far less interesting than cartoons. So, John Craven's Newsround attempted at changing the attitudes to news and make it more fun and interesting for the younger generation. Advantages: Really up to the minute news. Lots of features. Disadvantages: Haven't found any yet.
I’m a bit of a news junky, and I wouldn’t be a happy lady if I didn’t get my daily fix of news and everything that’s going on in the world.
I buy two daily newspapers (not the Sun!) and like to keep myself well up to speed on current events.
The web is another way I get all the latest and breaking news, and out of the hundreds of news services available online, my own particular favourite is still good old Aunty herself, ... ...and presented, and best of all, it’s very easy to use.
You get all the latest news of the day, and there is a link that takes you straight to their breaking news section, where you get all the hot news long before it reaches the print editions of the newspapers.
If you want to look up something specific, they also have a good search facility to take you quickly and simply to what you want to read, and there is a comprehensive A to Z index ...
