"Bigrag or how to make money from your opinions"

I find some people are still not aware of this op site. It is probably because it is for students though anyone can write on it.

Let’s explain it a bit:

As normal, you give a few details about yourself. And you will be asked if you are a student or in full time work, but this doesn’t make any difference at the end.

Writing/ Submissions:

Once you have registered you can start to write for the site. As it’s geared towards students, you won’t find here the same areas as I Dooyoo or Ciao (but the possibilities are increasing quickly).

The main areas are:

-Sound and Vision: music, film, computing.
-Sport and recreation
-Going out: pubs, clubs, cinemas, gigs
-Mind, body and soul: health, love/sex, fashion
- The mag: a bit of everything: jokes, creative writing, mpegs…

The submission system is different as well. Once you have your op and have decided which area it fits, pressing the submission button in this area will open your default e-mail program , with an e-mail ready to be send to them. You paste/write your op there without touching the subject line (that gives all the info for them) and send the e-mail. You can (and are strongly suggested to ) attach pictures, links … whatever may enhance your op.

The op will be read by Dan (the webmaster) before be posted on the site with nice formatting touches (bold letters, underlining…)

As all the ops are checked, this stops churning and other kinds of abuse and assures a good standard of quality.

I usually find my ops published the following day after posting them or even just some hours after, but I heard about some ops taking a few days.

If there is any problem with the opinion, any changes recommended or more info needed, I quickly get an e-mail from Dan explaining everything.

Getting paid

This time you don’t get paid for reads but by submissions. The rates are:

Gold medal : £2
Silver medal : £1.25
Bronze medal: £1
Any other opinions: anything up to £1

Gold medals are hard to get, in my case I have mainly bronze ones (how many reads would I need here ? 100+ ?)

So once you have your opinion posted you are awarded your money. Then you need to redeem it by replying a few questions before you are allowed to submit more ops. The questions are normally aimed at students (how often do you visit your union bar? …) or general (about Big Brother…). That is how the site makes its money.

The payment level is £5 (easy to reach) . You confirm your details (name, address) and you get your cheque in about a week, with a thank you letter and a Big Rag pen : nice touch!

That is where I am not so happy. I find the website difficult to navigate and the search function no very useful.

The layout is not very clear, you need to go through each section and subsection if you want to find something.

On the other hand, as I said before, each individual opinion is well presented (that , if you find it first).

You do not get paid for reads and you don’t even know who has been reading you, only how many people. The only exception, you may leave a comment on an opinion, then your name will appear. But not when you rate them.

If you put everything together (difficult navigation, not paid for read, no way to know who reads who) the solution to the equation is 0. And yes, I have some ops with 0 reads! Sao the only feedback you actually receive is from Dan (a busy guy).

Well, some people may get more reads (and there are all kind of tables: 25 people with more reads, with more medals…) but it is one of this places people write more than read around. At the end, you don’t need to be read to get your money.

I won’t recommend it as the main site to write for but it’s a nice sideline to get some extra money from your ops (and see how well they look with some pictures and formatting)

A good opinion and a fair assessment. I am a member of bigrag but rarely post due to the lack of community and my lack of time! An interesting read, cheers, Timmy.
