Last year I used a sunscreen on my children (then aged only 2 and a half, and 6-10 months) throughout the summer. That sunscreen was factor 30, and applied liberally and often. However, one very hot day in either April or May (not the hottest months of the year!!), we'd been out to a park, and the kids had been exposed to the sun for about three hours. They burnt. Really badly, and I felt extremely guilty. So the search for sun protection that works was borne.
I tried several products last summer (one of which cost me a whopping £35 a bottle), and neither of them worked, offering varying degrees of protection, so my kds had varying shades of red skin, so I ended up just following the guidelines of not being in the sun between the hours of 11am and 3pm. That's easier said than done though, don't you think?
Alas. I was talking to my uncle one day a few weeks ago, who has a five-year-old blonde (almost white) haired, fair-skinned little girl. He also works in some testing department in Boots. Apparently, their Soltan childrens sun lotions have been extensively tested, and they work!! Yeah right, I thought... But he assured me it had yet to fail on his own lttle girl, and they'd recently been to Disney World for her birthday. Still, I refuse to get excited about this discovery, after all he does work for the company, he would say that...
I rushed off to Boots, armed with my Advantage Card, thinking this miracle product is surely going to cost a fair bit...
~The Product~
I have only actually bought the SF30 Green Sun Lotion, which is exactly the same as the ordinary SF30 sun lotion, only, um, green. The green bit is made from apple extracts and moiserises the skin, but its purpose, for those of you not familar with green sun lotions, is so you can see where it's applied. A good idea, methinks. t also has added vitamins C and E to help repair the skin after exposure to the sun.
The product comes in a bright yellow bottle with a lime green cap, and costs a measly £1.49 for a 50ml bottle. If you think that's a good deal, there's even more good news, because this product is currently on a Buy One Get One Free offer.
I tend to reapply this product hourly, so I can't say how much longer than this it lasts, but the product is still visible (green tinge gives it away lol) after an hour, even when sweating or playing in a pool - though admittedly, my three year old has only done this once so far this year, and only for five minutes.
We went out for the day last week, and I'm please to say, whilst myself and my husband got mild sunburn, the kids didn't get a tinge, their skin didn't even feel warm to the touch. Now that is a good product.
WHILST I AM SURE THIS PRODUCT WILL BE JUST AS EFFECTIVE THROUGHOUT THE HOTTER MONTHS DURING THE REST OF THE SUMMER, I WILL OBVIOUSLY UPDATE IN A COUPLE OF MONTHS TO REFLECT UPON THEM.

Advantages: Goes on Green so no missed bits Disadvantages: Spray goes everywhere!
...on sun lotion. This boots Green Coloured Kids range is extremley good but a little pricey (I paid £9 for the spray and another £5 for the face stick.
The face stick is excellent, you just apply to the face (rather like a spot cream!) and the child's face goes green - you than know when to re-apply when the colour fades. the kids love it having a green face but they do lokk a little strange.
As for the spray - well it is an excellent protector and ... ...stick). There is also a handy little 'lock' that stops the trigger being compressed in your bag and going everywhere (Excellent!!). The lotion goes on green but once rubbed in vanishes so you can see where you have put the lotion and don't miss bits. However, one spray and it goes everywhere (all over the carpet when at ho,e, your clothes, the walls - EVERYWHERE!). I found it best to spray into my cupped hand and then apply to the child.
I have ...

Advantages: easy to apply Disadvantages: great for sensitive skins
My 18 month old son has sensitive skin so summers are a worrying time for me. Not only is the weather dryer which makes his skin worse but there's also the considereation of having to protect his skin from the sun. To do this I make sure that he always wears his hat when we go out (which usually ends up on the floor or thrown in the gutter because he never wants to wear it) and I dress him in long sleeved tops and long trouser. But when we went to ... ...sleeves were out the window and suntan lotion was in. I bought Soltan for kids because it claimed to be moisturinsing as well as providing great sun protection. It is a nice smelling green coloured cream which he found extremely fun to apply. So he didn't mind taking a break from building sand castles in order to reapply the cream. But best of all it kept his skin extremely moistuirised and healthy looking, oh yeah and he didn't burn once!
The best ...

Advantages: Colourful so you don't miss a bit. Not Gresy. Great Smell Disadvantages: I cannot think of any.
I have used this product several times now last year amd this year and I am still not disappointed. The colour means that you don't miss bits which is really important on such sensitive skin. The spray is fun and my daughter likes to help put it on now she is a little older. It is not a greasy formula so it goes on really easily and it smells great. Even after a swim I could still feel the lotion on her skin (although I topped it up anyway). Hot ...

Advantages: Provides excellent sun protection Disadvantages: Goes on like emulsion & doesn't rub in!!
I used factor 50+ Boots Soltan Baby on my 1 year old daughter this year on holiday. It was like covering her in whire emulsion paint - nothing was getting through it!! It was brilliant & didn't come off after she had been in swimming. We all ended up using it as well on our burnt bits and it was fab although it took about 3 days to come off - it didn't even wash off in the shower!! I really liked the fact that it offered 5 star protection as well ...
