Website awards given to cat-scan.com such as “Cruel Site of the Day” and “Muehlke's Waste of Bandwidth Award”. Can’t really argue with those. But a newspaper article, from the Daily Telegraph????

...to scan my cats.
Cat-scan.com is a site dedicated to displaying pictures of cats. Not your conventional camera snap shot, but scanned images of cats. Yes, you read that right. People actually put their cats on a flatbed scanner and scan them!!
“Welcome to CliffyB's Cat-Scan! Cat-Scan is home to people who love art as much as their cats. So much so, they combine the two! Every weekday we'll bring you the most hilarious cat scans available.”

...because it is well erm...weird. Cat-Scan.com is weird certainly but is it entertaining?
Hell no!
What you get is basically a bunch of pictures from members of the public who have scanned their cats. Yes, thats right, taken their cats and held them on the scanbed and scanned them. Sounds interesting? Then obviously you need to get out more. Lets ignore the plight of the cat for a moment and talk about the art. Well frankly its about as boring as ... ...of some paws, some fur the occasional rather angry looking face in the gloom away from the scanbed...sometimes just body parts and not entire cats. This is 'interesting' and 'fun' apparently. The front page has links to hundreds of these pieces of sh.. all there for your perusal should you be so bored. Its all very stupid...what more can you say.
Even if this were a fun site, with some great and exciting pictures, how can you justify doing this ...

I am not an animal lover but I was appalled by the site, sick people sending scans of cats in. The fact is that there are many people who take things to extreme, what if they send a picture of a dead cat in, that would be sick. Exposing cats to the bright light of scanners can't be very good either. When I first went to this site, it seemed a good laugh, some of the photos were really funny, and there were some good shots. They were WEIRD, and I ... ...I thought how cruel.
I know there are warning about not exposing you're cat to bright light but I think its not enough. Its such a sad and pointless site, I would give it the thumbs down and say it was one of the worst sites I have ever visited. It's offensive to cat lovers and since I have a cat I was deeply disturbed. I was even sad enough to e-mail them and complain and it looks like many people have. The only good thing about the site was that ...

If you're really worried about the rights of animals and the way we treat them then you may object to this site, although personally I don't think there's much wrong with it!
The idea is that those people with pet cats, and a scanner attached to their computer, can combine these two in the obvious way and get a picture of their cat put up online. The pictures are mostly of cat fur pressed against the scanner, with a couple of paws visible.
I found ... ...sure I'd bother going back to it again and again. Once you've seen one scanned cat you've pretty much seen them all.
Some of the amusement gained from the site comes from the 'hate mail' section, where abusive emails that the site owner has received are listed. These are the obvious comments about feline cruelty, but I can't really see how this differs too much from just picking your cat up. There are warnings about letting the scanner shine in ...

Advantages: Some interesting images, nicely presented, entertaining hate mail Disadvantages: Excessive profanity
This site first came to my attention back in July 1998, when it was mentioned in weekly satirical newsletter Need To Know (www.ntk.net). Back then, the site didn't have its own domain name, and was just a page on someone's personal website. Now, it has a far more professional look, following an extensive redesign in October 2000, with it's own personal URL at www.cat-scan.com, and I paid a recent visit to the site to investigate.
Basically, the ... ...and invites visitors of the site to submit their own images. Inevitably, the site has always generated an incredible amount of hate mail, mainly due to its depiction of animals solely for human entertainment. However, the site is quick to defend itself against such critics, refusing to accept images in which the cat appears to have been put through unnecessary stress, including any images involving the cats' eyes. They also refuse to accept images ...
