I have been an auditor for Cinecheck for about 3 months now, and have seen some great films, and some absolute dross. The thing is, I get paid for it, get to take my wife with me, and have some fun in the process.

Assignments are given out on Monday, by telephone or email, and the paperwork is available for download from the site on Wednesday. This includes a letter of authority granting you free admission to the cinema to carry out your checks.

All you have to do is to complete a simple questionnaire whilst you are watching the pre-feature adverts and trailers, making a note of what the ad/trailer is for, and the audience reaction. Apart from noting a few key times (lights down, 1st ad, 1st trailer etc) that's pretty much it. Then, you sit back and enjoy the film. If the film is playing on several screens, you have to perform the same checks on each screen, but you get paid extra for this.

Technically, the cinema manager can insist that you do your check and then leave without seeing the film, but that hasn't happened yet.

You then have to submit your results on line,(the deadlines for this are pretty tight, you must submit results before 10pm on Saturday night, or you won't get paid) post in your paperwork and that's it.

Depending upon the area in which you operate, you may also be asked to attend preview screenings and report on demographic data of attendees, or to check for correct placement/usage of advertising materials relating to a specific film.

All in all, cinema auditing is fun, interesting and varied, and I have seen some cracking films for which I would normally have waited for the video release. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys film, has the odd evening free and wants to earn (a little) extra money. Personally, I combine this with Mystery Shopping and manage to make a reasonable bit of pocket money for only a few hours a week.
