Just a quick review tonight!

Few towns in the UK are far from a ‘terrestrial’ COMET site, they’ve been around for around 25 years or so, and they have a fairly good reputation for providing branded consumer electrical goods at good prices.

Like many large enterprises, they operate a ‘web store’ – which offers modest discounts from the ‘shop’ prices.

I was on the lookout for a new Personal Computer, a SONY VGC-V2S, (which I’ve just reviewed) and found through KELKOO.CO .UK that COMET were offering this particular model on promotion at around £300 less than the list price.

What swung it for me were two things;

The delivery was ‘free’ and they would be happy to send it to an address other than the one registered with my credit card (I still had to provide this information to authenticate the transaction).

Not only could the alternative address be specified, but I could nominate a delivery date, although there were limitations to this.

The ‘free’ delivery only applied to Monday though Friday, and was promised between 9am and 6pm. For an additional fee they could make this AM or PM, or even weekends, but being a tight fisted jock, I settled for ‘standard’

The available dates were shown on screen, I clicked a radio button, and completed the transaction.

The box arrived on the appointed date (the first available ‘slot’ was roughly seven days from the purchase) at 10am.

The whole point in selecting ‘another’ address to send the goods to, was that I wasn’t going to be at home the particular day I chose for delivery, instead I got them to deliver it to my parents’ house.

I wasn’t there when the van arrived, but I was assured it was an entirely hassle-free handover. The packing box showed no signs of mishandling, the contents were exactly what I’d ordered and in perfect condition.

In terms of an overall rating, they scored 10 out of 10.

I couldn’t fault them.

I would have no hesitation in using them again, their site is well laid out, easy to navigate, and the ordering process entirely straightforward.

Prices are fractionally lower than those in the ‘shop’ and there’s an obvious drawback in as much as you can’t ‘try before you buy’ but if you’ve made up your mind exactly what you want first, I don’t see the problem!

I didn't have to renegociate the transaction, and have given the benefit of the doubt by marking them 'Excellent' - likewise, I had no recourse to use Customer Services.

If only every Internet purchase was as easy.

Were I on the lookout for more 'big ticket' electrical goods, I'd be perfectly happy to use them again.

Was it clear from the documentation whether warranty was from the manufacturer or the shop's own repair service? Bought a Bosch fridge a few years ago that developed a fault, phoned Bosch who sent an engineer. Engineer turned up at the house, unpacked tookit, asked to see purchase receipt, saw it was from Comet.....AND LEFT!! Phoned Bosch who said I ought to have mentioned where I'd bought it, told me to phone Comet instead. Apparently some Comet goods come without a manufacturer's warranty and hence are offered at a lower price with Comet's own warranty instead. This doesn't apply to all goods so is always worthwhile to check! Having said that Comet repaired my fridge no problem, including the handle which the Bosch engineer had broken in his hurry to leave!!
