Memory, or RAM (Random Access Memory), is a crucial component in any PC. It is where the Operating System, applications and ... ...for them to be quickly accessed by the processor. The more RAM you have in your PC, the more data that can be stored in memory and the quicker data will be accessed. The data inside a RAM module (memory stick) is different to that of a Hard Disk or floppy disk, as the data is only there for as long as your PC is running. Advantages: Excellent speedy RAM store. Superb FAQ and memory selector service Disadvantages: None to report.
..which is what you should not do.. be very gentle with RAM - that's memory for the computer to you and me.
Update 8/7/02 - Well I decided to upgrade the RAM again in this very same PC that I've had for just over a year now. Of course I chose Crucial again, based on my experiences in July 2001. I have to say the service was totally spot on. Ordered online Thursday PM - Email Sun PM to confirm dispatch - signed for new RAM on Mon AM!! This second ... ...my 64MB module, giving me 256MB and a bit more. Onto the original review now, written in July 2001.
Yes, I purchased a new computer the other day, and it was an absolute bargain for the price. The only qualm I had was that it only had 64Mb of ram. I know this is enough for basic PC operation but was hungry, I wanted more!!! Besides I thought it was an insult to the AMD Athlon 800Mhz processor and the DVD drive to only let them have 64Mb to play ...

24 hours later there was a reply from crucial saying yes i could upgrade and giving me the exact part number required.
I had a choice of 128 or 256 mb being a greedy bugger i thought i will go the whole hog and whack it up to 256mb thatll do me for a few years with a bit of spare capacity.

Advantages: Cheap, great range, brilliant service, fast free delivery, quality memory Disadvantages: None
I decided to upgrade my memory as my PC is two years old now and while it's still giving faithful service, I've filled up up with a fair few progams, and this had caused it to slow down. As it came with 64Mb of RAM and most PCs now seem to have at least 128Mb, and I'd read memory was of the easiest and cheapest upgrades, I decided to try upgrading my memory.
However I had no idea about these things- I'm reasonably competent at working basic Windows ... ...messed around with inside before, and the prospect of it made me distinctly nervous in case I ended up killing my faithful little PC with some ham-fisted blunder. Plus, I didn't know what type of memory I needed or exactly where it would go.
I did consider taking it in to be upgraded, but I knew I'd be charged a lot extra for the privilege of having it professionally installed and it would mean lugging my computer to the shop or sending it away. ...
