A Little Squirt
We get through quite a lot of washing up liquid in a week so decided to have a little look at a cheaper brand to save us some much needed money. We do our main shop at Tesco’s and found two cheaper options – the first in plain white – the typical look for a Tesco brand item and the second a smaller 500ml discount brand item. We have tried the very cheap one before and although worked so so, it wasn’t really that great so we opted for the second cheapest in the form of Discount Brands – Daisy.
DISCOUNT BRANDS
Tesco products have had a change in both look and name in many of their own branded items, and one of these are those now branded with the name ‘Discount Brands’. This new name comes with a new look which make the products less cheap looking, though still with the great prices and still the same products inside. They are not the cheapest of the Tesco brands but generally the second cheapest products on the shelf with many items around the store now brandishing this name from washing up liquid to bacon.
This is not a new scheme from supermarkets though one that seems to work as people are generally much happier buying products that don’t look so cheap and tacky.
PACKAGING
There are a few different scented Daisy washing up liquids, though this review covers the original scented one.
As with most washing up liquids, the actual packaging is basic. This small 500ml plastic bottle is no different with its slight hourglass shape and red screw top lid which flips open easily to enable you to pour the liquid into the bowl. The flip top lid has a substantial piece of plastic holding it on so no worries about it breaking off and it snaps down to close easily to avoid leakage. The bottle itself is a soft plastic to allow squeezing to enable you to get the liquid out easily, though you don’t really need this as the liquid flows easily.
On the front there is a simple sticker with the Discount Brand icon (a yellow box with red and white ‘discount brand’ name and a red pound sign being cut with scissors) on the corner and in large red letters ‘Daisy’. To go in with the name there is a white image of a daisy on the bottom in front of a green garden background. A simple label though effective and certainly not cheap looking.
On the back is a matching sized sticker with the barcode and information (no images) which include the directions for use – which is self explanatory really, some obvious warnings such as not suitable on fabrics and ingredients. Not all the ingredients can be seen on the back though a website is given, like on many detergent type products, to check the rest of the ingredients if need be. When I checked this, I found the ingredients were;
Aqua Sodium C14-18 Alkane Sulfonate Cocamidopropyl Betaine Sodium Laureth Sulfate Alkyldimethyl Amine Oxide Formaldehyde Parfum Citric Acid CI 42090 CI 19140
The washing liquid itself is a bold dark green colour and is quite thin in consistency which is great when pouring from the bottle, though don’t worry, even though it is very thin it still does its job. As I pour it from the bottle it flows freely into the bowl and lathers quite well under the running water. It does not have an excessive amount of bubbles though they are not extinct from the bowl either – just the right amount.
The scent of the liquid is quite a strong one and although not a nasty smell – it is not anything special, and rather a plain smell that you often find in cheaper original scented liquids. After washing, the scent does not linger for long on the plates etc, so you wont get washing liquid tasting dinners which is a plus!
I has quite a lot of dishes to wash (which ended up being about four bowl fulls including saucepans) and did find that after a short while I did have to redo the water as the liquid had practically gone so it doesn’t last a very long time in the water – perfect for a small amount of dishes though.
The liquid worked as you would expect with getting the dishes clean and also worked fine with the heavier items such as saucepans (my worst part of washing up). If you have left an item without rinsing it, though, you still need to scrub hard to get it off – it is certainly not a magical liquid. I have found that it works much better the hotter the water so as long as you are scalding your hands then your dishes with clean themselves!
Some washing up liquids leave my hands dry and irritable, though this one did not do any of this – just made them smell for a while of washing liquid!
PRICE AND AVALIABILITY
This item is exclusive to Tesco and is a cheap price of only £0.57p for a 500ml bottle so a good price. The stock is always on the shelf when we go shopping so no worries about picking this item up.
FINAL WORD
This washing up liquid is at first glance very good value with the price being so low and the dishes being washed as well as many other expensive liquids, though I have noticed that you really do end up using a lot more per wash than you generally would with others which brings the great value down slightly as you need to buy more, though you would still save a little bit of money compared to some liquids.
It is average scented, certainly not a nasty smell, and does not seem to harm the skin in any way so I would certainly recommend this item for the smaller amounts of dishes though certainly not if you are doing huge piles of washing a day as it just would not last very long at all.
Advantages: OK if your dishes aren't too dirty Disadvantages: Not as good as the branded products
...mainly in a range called Daisy which I hadn’t heard of before but I decided to try the washing up liquid. I purchased the concentrated washing up liquid with antibacterial action in the 500ml size which cost me 67p. Had I chosen the standard Daisy washing up liquid in the same 500ml size it would have cost me just 57p.
The idea is that this washing up liquid will cut through grease and dirt and leave the dishes sparkling clean. I wasn’t convinced ... ...the past only to be disappointed but I thought it was worth a try for the price.
The washing up liquid is bright blue and doesn’t really smell of anything much.
To be honest I have found it adequate for my needs. I don’t use oil or fat for cooking these days so my pots don’t tend to be greasy at all so that helps. I just put a generous squirt of the liquid into a bowl and run hot water into it. I get a reasonable amount of lather but not as much ...
