De montfort university leicester - My first and only uni
After 2 full years at de montfort university leicester, i can say that i am satisfied that it was a good choice for me. It may not be the best university on paper, or even physically, but i find it very good.
I am studying for a BSc Business Information Systems and am really enjoying the course. The IT department is very good, with access to PC and Unix labs very readily available. At times of need (coursework deadlines etc.) though the labs can become full quite quickly. This can cause problems occasionally but there are plenty of places to go.
The main problem with this (and a few other in Computer Science and Engineering faculty) course is the management. The faculty is quite poorly organised and coursework marking, results etc. take a long time coming through. Unlike most other faculties we do not get individual timetables, instead having to print off a communal one and then crossing out the erroneous modules. Student life in leicester in good, though - the city is lively and well organised for the extra 10% of residents it has for the academic year.
Many pubs have a student focus and feel to them and the centre is 5-10 minutes walk from uni. The student union is not the best I have visited but it offers cheap drinks at the bar, regular events and nights and cheap edible food from the canteen. The union shop also sells many discounted items.
Most students spend the first year in halls - i would recommend it. This gives you a chance to meet people and socialise while living in secure housing. Most of them are not marvellously nice so it also means you will appreciate a student house afterwards.
There is a lot of student housing near to the uni, mostly focused around the narborough road to the east of campus, within a few minutes walk. You have to check out the houses and the landlords, as with anywhere but I haven't heard any major housing scares.
There is a sports centre close to the uni where you can join cheaply and not pay for the rest of the year, which allows access to tennis, badminton, table tennis and football courts and also (after an induction) to the gym.
(Ive never been to the library but im guessing its good cos it has a cool tent looking sculpture thing on the front!!)
Whichever uni you decide to go to, enjoy it.
