After graduating from DMU last summer, I have now had over half a year to reflect back on my experience. I was living at Kingsfisher Court which was newly built when I arrived there in September 2003. My faculty building(Clephan) was situated just at the end of the road from here so this was perfect for me. In terms of location, DMU has it all. It is only a 5 minute walk into town from the main campus. The halls are situated with a maximum of 10 mins walking distance. The student union has some awesome nights with Cheesy nights at the beginning of the week and then moving on to some R n B to finish the week off. I would say the only downside of attending DMU is the appalling reputation it seems to have accredited to itself. The Art department is reputable with many of the designers having gone on to create some fantastic master pieces. However, I feel that the uni overall is suffering slightly. The process of entry needs to be far stricter than how it is currently set. On the day I visited I was sat in a room with three other potential students and we each had to discuss are reasons for wanting to study our chosen subjects. The whole process lasted around 20 minutes and then we were allowed to leave.Within 3 days they had sent me an offer letter in the post. I feel that this could have been done more professionally and they should vet their candidates more to gain an understanding of what they are trying to acheive from attending uni.
I have found it very easy to find employment since leaving DMU. I firstly began a job working for the council and now I am working for one of the leading recruitment companies as a recruitment consultant. Rather interestingly, one the candiadates who I am employing also attended DMU. He is now a successful Quantity Surveyor,I believe this demonstrates how DMU can help people to step into their desired careers.
