I have to start off by saying DMU Leicester has been one of the worst experiences of my life. That includes all three years (2004-2007).
I live in Leicester but I really did not want to come to this uni. My financial circumstances meant that this was my only other option.
I studied on the LLB Law course having got an A in A Level law.
As far as the teaching quality goes I found that a number of staff were not interested in helping the students especially if you were brown. To get help help you either had to be special needs, be extremely friendly with the teachers, or dress smart i.e trousers. shoes etc.
Sometimes it felt like the lecturers were hoping that you did not do better than what they achieved as students i.e happy to see you fail.
The course demands that you do several pieces of coursework. The number of courseworks you have to do can be up to 12. That is far too many, as courseworks can be very stressful. In most other uni's the maximum pieces of coursework you have do to is 2 on the LLB law course's.
In my final year I had a dissentation in for the 26th April a piece of coursework in for the 23rd April also whilst my first exam was on the 1st May. I was given no guidance even when I requested it from a teacher. This teacher went out of her way to avoid helping me for my dissertation. She was more than happy to help other students daily.
I believe I was not given sufficient time to revise for my exams in my final year and this only added to the stress of being inmy final year. The coursework did not help. It had a detrimental effect on exams. My sister for example went to University of Birmingham and had 4 weeks to revise before her first exam.
Some of the teachers are extremely nice people but that does not make them fit to teach. For example in the labour law module every week we were told to fill in the missing blanks in a booklet. It turned out that if revised from you would only just scrape a 2:1 mark. So what was the point in turning up for that? A complete waste of time.
The students that attend this university are only interested in getting a degree of any kind and getting drunk. The decent students are very much a small group.
I believe that coming to this university has meant that I have taken three steps back. I am without a doubt in a worse off position than when I left college. This experience has left me extremely depressed and angry. I consider myself a positive person, but this experience has left me shattered.
It could be said that DMU was in breach of duty.
