I never thought that my time at University would make me depressed to the point of suicide....
Like another reviewer on this site I to would have to say that DMU Leicester has been the worst experience of my life and I do not say this lightly.
I undertook law through 2004-2007 and chose DMU as they (apparently) offered a wide variety of law classes options I obtained A,B,B for my A-Levels.
Like the other reviewer who experienced a bad time at DMU they are not alone in their belief that racist behaviour goes unchecked. I am white and have noticed that racism at DMU is full circle as I and friends have experienced racist taunts and innuendo from fellow students and the staff have ignored complaints as well as physical attacks on students.
The teaching ranges from ok to a total waste of time and money.
I concur with ‘Rumble1’ I absolutely felt like the lecturers went out of their way to make sure you did not do better than what they achieved as students (i.e. mark you down and be patronising).
The University is aimed for below average students and caters for heavy drinkers.
The exams are done early so that teachers have nice long holidays.
Exams are also done one after the other (e.g. Land, Tort on a Monday; EC on Tuesday) they are done in a smelly sports hall when its roasting hot.
In my final year dissertation I was given no guidance even when I requested it from a teacher (who never turned up for meetings on 3 occasions.) This teacher went out of their way to avoid helping me. She was more than happy to help other students even though it was to do with non law related questions.
There are a few (and I mean few) decent teachers but they are always busy.
The nice teachers are not fit to work (e.g. the teacher who refers to her ex’s mistress as Madame Butterfly – you will get the reference if you ignore this review and go there).
The bad teachers care more for writing their books and pawing it to you in lectures (Tort teachers especially). Some write their exams inline with their books teachings so you are forced to buy their books.
The law library is not as good as they promote as you will see when you need a book and find that the one they have is many versions older than what for sale (e.g. a 1987 book when there are updates published each two years).
Certain events which I experienced there (of which I know other students have experienced) have let me so upset. I can not express how bad the staff are when you have a problem.
The sheer incompetence, laziness, and rudeness of the Law staff will lower your expectation of humanity so if you want to waste three years getting drunk and walking away with a toilet paper degree then DMU is for you.
