I’m a very emotional person and I take a lot of things to heart, so I was often having disagreements with people over nothing at all. It didn’t matter if the person was a co worker or a partner I just seemed to need a release of tension everyday. So on the recommendation of someone I got chatting to online I joined deardiary.net. It seemed to be the perfect place and exactly what I needed, somewhere online to let of steam about everything that no one was likely to see.
So what is dear diary.net I hear you ask. Well it’s a free online diary service that allows you to keep a sort of personal journal. There is also a payment option to subscribe to a more advanced section of the site. As I said the main services of the site are free and the registration process is quick and simple. You simply have to fill in one form with the usual details, user name and e-mail and within seconds you are registered. In the next minute or so an e-mail hits your e-mail account including a password and you can be up and running straight away.
The front page is a simple white colour with the join link and log in link clearly marked. Elsewhere there are the 10 most popular diaries of the day and ten that have been updated. It’s all quite simple and easy to find your way round. So now that your logged in its time to head for your own diary. To start with the diary is green but using the customize tab across the top you can alter the look of your page to many different styles and patterns. You can pretty much decorate it in anyway, which I find to be really good.
You have the choice to either pass your friends the link to your diary or it can be randomly found by searching for it. One of the advantages with the upgraded version of the site, which cost about £23 a year is that you can remove yourself from the search. This means that only your friends can find your diary, which I prefer as I do tend to get a bit crazy in there so it helps to keep it private. The upgrade also provides you with an e-mail address that a standard membership doesn’t include.
It is possible for ANYONE to read your diary and at the same time you can read anyone else’s and be warned some of them do contain content not suitable for kids. So unless you do opt for an upgraded account then please be careful what you write.
To make new diary entries is pretty simple. On each diary there is an add new entry tab and once you click there you can type your entry then submit it. You can also add photos to your diary entries by linking from other sites, which I find to be an excellent addition to the site. It’s well laid out and incredibly easy to navigate your way around the site and its quick and easy to start using it. I’ve never used an online diary service before but this one seems to be pretty good.
The free section of the site is all paid for by adverts, which vanish when you upgrade to the full paying version. The paying membership features change all the time as they are gradually filtered through onto the free site and new ones added to keep the site developing. If you find a diary you find interesting you can get e-mail alerts to notify you that a person has added something new, which has helped me keep up to date with a few friends.
Overall I find this to be an excellent site to use and a superb release for that pent up frustration. It’s a free service that is open to everyone. I think these sort of sites are brilliant and dear diary.net doesn’t seem to have too many problems. I’d prefer my free account to only be open to people I choose but then that’s why I paid the upgrade on my other account. It’s an excellent site and one I would be happy to recommend to anyone whose like me.
