~ ~ The one thing I could really do with at present is a new desk- top computer.
We first got a computer about six years ago, an old IBM 486 that somebody or other was putting out in the rubbish, and it is the same system that we have today. (with a few changes, mind you!)
We now have now added an AMD 350Mhz chip, and a new motherboard, Cd Rom, and modem, plus 128mb of Ram and a 4Gb hard drive, so while it’s hardly “state of the art” technology by today’s standards, it works well most of the time, and is good enough for our needs.

~ ~ We fitted the new hard drive just over two years ago, and at the time it was considered fairly large, whereas now it pales in comparison to the 30Gb drives (plus) which are becoming the norm.

~ ~ More than anything else, it is the small capacity of the hard drive which we find the biggest inconvenience, as it is amazing all the different uses you find for your computer once you have it around the house for a while.
I use it for my journalism work (plus Ciao, off course) and my wife uses it as an extension of her work computer.
Add to this the huge number of computer games that my wee nine-year-old daughter has loaded, and you have a hard drive that is really finding the going tough.

~ ~ We nearly invested in an external zip drive last year, when in the course of my “wanderings” around the Web, I happened to find a site that looked as though it might be the answer to our problem.
Not only has it proved its worth since, it has been an absolute blessing.
Let me tell you about “Driveway.com.”

~ ~ Driveway advertise themselves as the world’s largest free online storage site.
The basic idea is very simple. Once you register, you are given 25Mb of free storage space, into which you can upload whatever files take your fancy, thus freeing up space on your own hard drive.

~ ~ Our use of Driveway is fairly basic.
I personally use it as a way of “backing up” all of my journalism files, plus all my accounts and expenses for my taxi business going back a number of years.
This gives me protection in the event of my hard drive or computer system ever “crashing”, as well as freeing up space on my own hard drive that is always bursting at the seams.
I now have peace of mind knowing that my important financial records, and years of my writing endeavours, are safely stored away from my own system in the event of a doomsday catastrophe.

~ ~ My wife uses it a little differently. If she is developing something important at work, then she “uploads” the files she wants onto Driveway, and these can then be easily accessed if she wants to work on them them at home.
There was also an occasion recently when she was off ill for about three weeks, and one of her work colleagues was able to keep her up to speed on a project they were developing, by uploading all the files onto our Driveway account.
This allowed her to work nearly as effectively as if she were actually in the office in person, and by using this facility, they were able to “pass” work simply and effectively to each other over the Web, without having to go to all the bother of emails and attachments.

~ ~ Even my little girl has got in on the act.
Previously, I was forever “uninstalling” her favourite games in order to make space on the hard drive. This used to drive her mad, as she had “saved games”, that were obviously lost when the game was uninstalled.
Many a tear was spilt when “Daddy killed Lara Croft again, mummy!”.
Now we store her games at Driveway, and they can very simply be downloaded again whenever she wants to play them.

~ ~ Once you have uploaded a file from your own system, Driveway even gives you the facility to create separate files for storage purposes. You can have one file for games, another for accounts, or indeed for any purpose you can think off.
Files are designated as personal, business, and important.

~ ~ Once you have your account up and running, you can even “drop and drag” files on your desktop straight into your driveway account.
Even save whole web pages can be saved for later retrieval, so that even if the content of the page alters, you have a cached record of the page you saved, along with a record of the time and date you saved it.

~ ~ Another purpose for which we use Driveway is to “share” family photographs with my own family in Scotland. (I live now in Dublin, Ireland)
I have a good scanner (HP 5300C), and scan in family photos, which I then upload and store at Driveway.
I have a couple of cousins (no brothers or sisters, I was an “only” child) I still keep in touch with, and by giving them my user-name and password, they can look at our family “photo album” online, and then return the compliment the other way round.

~ ~ Although I don’t use it for this purpose myself, another useful function that Driveway could be used for is to store “music”, or MP3 files.
These are notoriously large, and take up an enormous amount of disc space, so if you are an MP3 aficionado then driveway could be just what you’ve been looking for.

~ ~ It could also be helpful to students, if they do a lot of research work in the College library.
They could easily upload whatever research material they needed into their Driveway account, for use later at home.

~ ~ There are one or two little pitfalls that I should mention.
Once you are registered, Driveway inundates you with offers of additional free storage space, in exchange for taking part in online surveys, signing up friends, special offers, and so on. I’m sure you know well the type of thing I mean. An extra 10Mb if you fill out this, an additional 5Mb if you do that.
To do so is a bad mistake, because this information is then “sold on” to other commercial concerns that quite literally flood your mailbox with “Spam” mail.
I got round this by simply registering a separate email account that I use only for this purpose only.
As well as this, the upload and download times can be very slow, depending on the time of day you are logged on. I get by this problem by simply having the programme working in the background, while I get on with more important work.

~ ~ If you do find that you really do need additional space, then you can always purchase this from Driveway themselves. They will sell you up to an additional 500Mb, at 100Mb a time.
The prices are in US Dollars, and are currently $29.95 for 100Mb for a three-month period, or alternatively you can pay a yearly figure up-front of $107.95.

~ ~ So to conclude.
I have found this a most helpful website. If you are one of these lucky people with a 30Gb hard drive, you may not consider it essential.
But even the best and most reliable of systems can have a nervous breakdown, and this is your insurance policy should disaster strike.
When I eventually talk myself into getting rid of my old system, and joining the 21st century, all I need do is download all my files from Driveway onto my new computer.
That, in itself, makes it useful enough for me.
