Yes, its really true. If you have an e-mail account you can also benefit from a fax facility.
All you need to do is sign up with www.yac.com. They will give you a free number - starting 0709 - (and which can also be used for voice calls and an answering service) which can be used for faxes. Your received faxes are sent on to you by e-mail and appear in a .tif file for you to save or print.
The cost of sending faxes is not too high - about the same as calling a mobile phone so it is not prohibitive.
One of the real beauties is that your fax is available 24/7/365 - no need for an extra line!
If you have a fax driver for your PC's modem and a scanner you can completely dispense with the need for a fax machine.
I have used the system for several months now and have found it to be excellent.
Is this the end of fax machines and jamming paper?

Very interesting. I'd never heard of it before. Take care, Michael.
Advantages: Local international numbers, send and receive by email, online storage Disadvantages: Hours' delays in sending, not able to send or receive.
