Like many others I have been intrigued by the auction sites that can be found on the internet. I watched in amazement just before Christmas (2000) when a Sony Playstation II was placed on a one hour auction, no reserve and ended up selling at £1,300.00 - this figure was only due to the fact the hour was up.
However until a few months ago I did not buy at auction - sending off a cheque for goods I had not received definately went against the grain. I was simply afraid of taking the risk. Then I discovered a new payment system this is called paypal. The website is www.paypal.com
This system used to be exclusively for the United States, trust the Americans to get all the good things first, but now they've gone international! Yippee!
Right to the crux of the matter, this is how the paypal system operates. First of all you need to go to the site and register, this involves giving them your name, address (home and shipping if there is a difference), email address and credit card details. Don't panic they guarantee as part of their service that each account is insured for up to $100,000.00. First of all you must confirm your email address with them and then they will LODGE a whole one cent in your credit card account, this is done twice. The reason for this is that the lodgements will have unique identity codes which you must confirm to activate your account.
Paypal will never ever disclose your credit card details to any store or third party, this includes whoever you are buying goods or services from. This they guarantee and is covered by their insurers.
Now the best bit, buying stuff. You can pay anyone who has an email address, yes that get out clause of I'll give you that money the next time I see you has suddenly vanished. Anywhere you see a MasterCard logo you can pay by paypal. If you are buying goods at auction you simply require their paypal account email address, (usually the same as the one they have used for to list the auction).
Paypal send you a receipt for your transaction and notify you of when they inform the recipient of your emailing of funds to them. They also notify you when those funds are collected and you can rate the recipient for service.
Ok the best bit is over, now for the small print, don't worry its not bad. Individual accounts (private/personal) are free to set up, free to send money and free to receive money - you can't tell me you can get better than that! Business accounts have a small charge, no more than 1%, and it depends on the service level you opt for. They also have a phenomenal customer service, automated email response followed up by a personal answer within 12hours.

PayPal has just started providing facilities for UK current accounts (March 2001).

I think this was a very informative opinion. I know feel as if I know a great deal about a website I had not even heard of. Great work!

Excellent and informative opinion, but it is about Paypal not really about e-bay, any chance that you could get it re assigned to the correct category. Thanks, the opinion was great and useful.
