I am one of the many people that have an account on ebay and I sell whatever I don't want or need anymore, and I love to see if there is anything that I want to buy. The trouble is that once you start bidding you just can't stop and it can cost you a lot of money if you don't have some willpower. The first time I bid for something was because I was looking for a very old CD and I found it in the USA. I made my offer and then won the CD only to find that the man selling it had never done a deal with a Brit before, but he said that there was a first time for everything and so I sent my money. 2 weeks later I had my CD in my hand and from that day I was hooked. I then tried my hand at selling and I have been pretty successful, so all in all I enjoy the site. BUT I do think that ebay take far too much money on the advertising side. They charge you for putting your ad on then a % on the final price (it can cost a lot in the long run)and if you don't sell and have to relist you have to pay again. I have found that if you sell in the UK you are better off on www.loot.co.uk as they don't charge you at all and if you want to sell overseas then try www.edeal.com, they only charge a % at the end and not for the ad.
Thanks for the hint about the cheaper auction. I find it quite expensive to sell things on ebay as well, but usually wait until they have one of their occassional 'free-listings' days. They notify me of these by email, and I put everything I have to sell on the auction at once.
