That's what Ebay is for primarily, an outlet for people to list things that they don't want and get money for them. You name it, it may have been on the site. You can bid for anything from videos to Elvis memorabilia just by clicking a few buttons.
One of my problems is that I'm a horder of things that I'm never going to need again but keep just in case, sometimes I buy things just for the sake of it and rarely use them, I used to do it a lot with cd's. Imy closet I had a lot of PC software that was still wrapped that I had picked up cheap so I listed a few on the site to see what would happen. I typed my item description, listed it in a catagory and qouted a minumum bid price and let it run for 10 days. At first nothing happened and I though it was pointless but it seems bidders don't bite at first, no they wait a few days to feel things out before striking with a bid. I ended up getting quite a bit more for my software than I had intended without having to pay much to advertise.
Ebay charge a fee for listing your goods on the site, this can be anything from 15 pence upwards. It depends on how much you want for the item. Once the auction is over they take a small percentage of the sale depending on how much it went for. Either way it's a very small sum for what you normally sell it for.
Bidders can e-mail you questions about the goods if they wish and both parties are sent notification to say if the bid was the winner and who won. You then correspond with the bidder and arrange payment/shipment. So far I've not had any troubles, all bidders can get ratings from succesful transactions. The higher the rating the more a bidder/seller knows you can be trusted.
All your sale/bid can be viewed on your own account apge. You can be notified when you're outbid on an item and who by. You can also see what's been going on with your auctions.
There's so much on this site you can buy and it's quite surprising that some people will pay over the odds for goods they can easuily buy in the shops or online for cheaper. I alone have made close to £100 this week just for seeling some stuff that I have no use for!
Occasionaly Ebay have free listings days like yesterday, as a result I saved a good £20+ in listings fees just to get rid of some rubbish.
