It’s official; I have caught the Ebay bug! I have always browsed Ebay on the off chance I may want to buy something one day, but then I decided to sell something.
*****BACKGROUND****
Ebay was created in 1995 by a chap called Pierre Omidyar. However Ebay.co.uk wasn’t created until 1999. According to the website it now has over 12.6 million registered users, with over 375,000 new items being added daily. That’s some staggering info when you think about it.
****WHAT”S IT ALL ABOUT THEN?*****
The general idea is to buy and sell goods from other people. It’s great for when you’re having a clear out.
****DO I HAVE TO REGISTER?****
To trade on Ebay you do have to register, although you are free to browse without registering at any time.
1. Select your country. 2. Enter e-mail address 3. Name, address etc
The registration process is carried out using secure
transfers. N.B: You must be over 18 to register at Ebay.co.uk.
Once registered you can buy and sell to your hearts delight.
****MY EBAY*****
Here you can keep track of all items you are selling and any items you have bid on, or are watching. You can also keep track of your personal account with Ebay, i.e. any fees you owe. (More on that later). Feedback is also featured here. This is where you can leave feedback for other members who you have traded with, and also feedback can be left for you.
****BROWSE*****
There are loads of categories to choose form if you are willing to browse the thousands of items listed. The other option is, you can enter what you are looking for in the search box. Categories range from antiques to McDonalds Toys, to laptops, to baby clothes. It’s like one massive up market car boot sale, and if you’re lucky you will find the item you want at car boot sale prices.
*****SELLING*****
To sell your item, Ebay will take you through a guided tour to help you along the way if you need guidance. Follow all the online instructions and you will find you have listed your item in no time. It really is painless.
****HELP CATEGORY****
Here, you will find answers to lots of questions you may have about buying something, selling something etc. Definitely worth a visit now and again whether you are new to Ebay or not. You can never know enough.
****FEES****
Ebay charge fees to list an item, and also a final value fee if the auction is sold.
For vehicles the listing fee is fixed at 5.00GBP, and Real estate it’s fixed at 30.00GBP
Final value fees: 5.25% up to 15.00GBP 2.75% up to 600GBP 1.50% greater than 600.01GBP
You can pay Ebay the balance of your account by direct debit, or cheque, or a one-time credit card payment. Ebay will email you your invoice once a month and bills have to be paid once the amount reaches 1.00GBP.
*****FEEDBACK*****
Each member can send positive, neutral or negative feedback to another member, depending on how his or her trade was completed. Ebay do state that you should try and resolve all conflicts with the other Ebay member before leaving negative feedback. For each positive feedback you receive, your feedback value will rise by one point, a neutral feedback means your feedback score stays the same, and it will be decreased by one point for a negative feedback. It’s always advisable to check out other people’s feedback comments before trading with them to see other people’s experiences. Whilst most people are trading honestly, there are guaranteed to be some who aren’t.
*****ADVANTAGES OF EBAY****
- fun way to trade - mostly honest people - good way to get rid of stuff you no longer want - an online way of making money
****DISADVANTAGES*****
- fees are charged as opposed to other auction sites that don’t charge listing and final sale fees. - Beware of dodgy traders
All in all Ebay is a great place to trade. Sites such as Yahoo auctions (closing down at end of June) don’t charge you listing fees but the atmosphere isn’t there, and some goods don’t get bid on because the client base isn’t nearly as long as Ebay.
The website in itself can be quite slow sometimes, but I suspect this is due to the large amount of pictures you are viewing. All in all however it is very clear and consise.
Enjoy it, but be careful. If you’re still reading the thank you for staying with me this long.

Good op. I wonder if they still charge you for selling a item even if it doesnt end up getting sold?

Apart from the fact my name is not Ang - this is exactly my story. Do you think they will ever open Ebayaholic clinics?
Advantages: Sell unwanted items; Buy wanted items cheaply; Well structured site. Disadvantages: Transactions are the users risk. People who don't pay up for goods they've won.
