The Great Escape
Well, I hope it is the small beginning of the great escape, from my job that is!!
Firstly let me tell you that if you need an opinion stating, excellently all the why’s and wherefores of eBay then please refer to ‘eBay Gum’ by Alflavor, an excellent opinion which will point you in the right direction.
What this opinion is, is my story of eBay, how I started, what is happening now, and where I would like it to lead. If any of my ideas give you your own then great! If not I hope it is a good read anyway!
My sister began first on eBay and told me all about it. To be honest, I thought oh right she’s found something else on the Internet, but I’ve not got time for all of that! So I did nothing. A few months later she was still talking about it – and I was still doing nothing…
So I ventured on the site to take a look. I began by looking around, pretty much like I do on every site when I start, just like I did here – suss it all out first is my motto. You can buy everything on eBay from shoes to hats, cars to holidays, gargoyles to bibles….. I defy anyone to look around the site and not say at least once ‘Mmm…that looks interesting!’
Starting Out ~~~~~~~~~~
I decided to register and went under the pseudonym Cordelia_Chase (being a Buffy fan and the name Pagan had already been taken) Registering was easy, but you do need to supply either a credit card or bank details in order to pay your auctions fees.(more of this later). You also need to provide an email address, so they can email you when your auctions
close and also if you’re bidding on something and have been outbid they mail you and tell you so you can up the anti if you so desire. So I sold a number of items I no longer wanted, including some holiday vouchers I had won, £150 worth of vouchers sold for £120! I had a nice bit of ready cash and my buyer saved £30 of his holiday – everybody’s happy!!
By this time I was hooked, I found myself, just like my sister wandering around the house looking at objects, thinking ‘Do I really want this? Will it sell? How easy is it to post’ Those of you who know I am recently a single woman once again…I didn’t sell him on eBay – honestly!!!!!! Your Honour….
Charges and Stuff ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In order to list an item it costs you 15p for anything listed under £5.00. You can set reserve prices but I have only used this once (for my vouchers – I set it at £89) but this can more quite costly if you do it every time. You can list your item in the gallery (more of this later) for an extra 15p, and have a ’BUY IT NOW’ for 5p – which means a buyer can just buy your item – often at a higher cost but without the hassle of an auction. To buy on eBay there are no charges other than the cost of the item and mostly the buyers pay the postage charge rather than sellers.
Getting Hooked! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It really is very east o get hooked on eBay – within a month I had made £200, had a much tidier house with a lot less junk and was looking at items in charityshops in a whole new light. I never actually bought anything specially to sell on eBay but just did my own stuff, any freebies I got sent of got from supermarkets etc. Or things I had made (crystal necklaces and the like).
Watching Others and Learning…. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Being rather ‘glum’ at work, this is an understatement but it is 5.40 on Sunday and I really don’t want to dwell on work…. I began to look at eBay during the day from my PC at work and just generally peruse what people were doing. I noticed that some people were selling the same sort of items (or trying to) but when one person was commanding £20 -£30 for an item someone else was getting £5…why? What could this mean to me?
Well, I noticed how people listed stuff, using words like rare, collectable, stunning, designer, goth, pagan – words that fitted the description but caught the eye.
I also saw how to use the gallery. For an extra 15p per listing you can have a little picture on the actual search list. You get one picture for free anyway and I just used to do this, but a gallery picture which lists alongside your item, means it comes up on more searches and also looks great in your free and easy to set up eBay store.
Your description is oh so important, again use and choose your words carefully – your job is to pull in your buyer, they’ve seen the picture and the title so are interested enough to look closer so don’t scare them away with a ‘It’s a jumper, it’s nice buy it’ sort of description.
Sizes, colours, as much detail as possible and don’t forget the hook words, ‘You will look stunning!’ ‘You’ll be the envy of your friends’ ‘ This item is a must have’ etc etc…. Maybe I should sell my marketing tips on eBay !?!?!?
Use simple html in your descriptions, eBay has a very easy basic html lesson on it – take it from me if I can centre, change colour of text, add paragraphs, go bold etc – anyone can!!!
Progression ~~~~~~~~~
It was only a matter of time, even with moving house and finding yet more junk (err…I mean treasures…) before my supplies were running dry.
I decided I wanted to open my own eBay store. I have always wanted my own shop – a new agey type affair would suit me down to the ground. Anyway, not being able to afford property at this time, but still having dreams, I opening my eBay shop.
I just needed stock, OK where from?!?! I searched the Internet but only found expensive stuff you would buy for yourself (i.e. retail prices) – last month I had to visit the Autumn Fair at the NEC for work, to look for toy wholesalers/manufactures to advertise in the magazine I work on.
I wasn’t happy; I’d spent 3 days at Earls Court just before the weekend and now Tuesday I was driving to yet another show. Not a happy bunny… However I entered the NEC to find 8 halls of toys and gifts, a positive cornucopia of wholesale opportunities!!
Having a press pass I was allowed into the Press Office where I could collect press releases, brochures and catalogues for all the exhibitors. Tee hee I was in 7th heaven!! Best day’s work I’ve done in a long while!!
On returning I contacted various suppliers that took my fancy, I wanted good quality items for the lowest cost possible but I also needed a low minimum order. Some were £1000 – way out of my league. I hit on a couple which had £100 minimum orders and I was away.
Setting up Shop ~~~~~~~~~~~~
OK I have waited long enough – here is the shameless plug, you can see the shop I have set up – Pagan’s Cave at www.stores.ebay.co.uk/paganscaveltd
Selling lots of New Age, Gothic, Witchy type items, soon to have some excellent clothes in it but my order won’t arrive until October so I just have to be patient.
Finally seller’s on eBay get ‘trusted’ by their feedback, a little number in brackets after your name. If you have a high number it means you have bought and sold a lot and been successful in your dealings, people will leave you feedback comments such as; ‘pleasure to deal with’ ‘Good eBayer’ ‘ Great communication, good sent swiftly’ and the like.
So all the time I was selling my own items to clear out my house/flat I was building up my score! I am currently on 96 and 4 more comments will get me a green star – wehey!!
Hopefully, this will get even more sellers to visit my shop – knowing they will get a good deal into he bargain.
Plans for the Future ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, it may be a pipe dream, but my plans are to keep on with the eBay store, learn how to set up my own web site and set up an online store.
Obtain a list of email addresses for a monthly newsletter come catalogue.
Eventually opening my own ‘real’ store on terrafirmer…..
Who knows…little acorns and all that?!?!
Anyone who wants to be on my mailing list can contact me on helen@paganscave.co.uk - take a look at the store and tell me what you think!!
Update 2.4.04 ~~~~~~~~~~~~
I thought you may like to hear how I was getting on, and if it lets just one person out there know you can begin to work for yourself and give the dead end job the 'heaveho' then it's worth writing this bit! You may notive I have updated my shop address as we are now Ltd. I set up a limited company on 11.11.03. My partner Richard has learnt to use Dreamweaver and has completed a great new web site for me - see my home page for details. And biggest thing of all.... I left my awful job and now work 3 days per week in a new job and 2 days a week for myself, we thought it's no use jakking everything in in one go and stepping into the great unknown, so this is a nice way of keeping the mortgage paid at the same time as working for myself!!
I saw as I reread the op that one of my goals was the mailing list, well that is set up and growing! And the next goal is the bricks and mortar shop, well that's a few years away yet...but look out in the Hemel area as we now regularly take a stall at Psychic Fayres to sell our wares!
So come along if you can - meet me and of course Richard who has made it all possible, by not only supporting me so I can work part-time and get this off the ground, but also giving me the belief in myself that I can do it!!

Excellent, I've only just got into Ebay but it is addictive! Don't know if I'd have the time and energy to open up a shop, so I'm very impressed! Just having a look at your shop now! Emma x
Advantages: Bargains to be had, things you can sell, the feedback system, the whole community Disadvantages: Disadvantages: the over priced fees occasionaly seem too high, falling for scams :(
