I started seriously with ebay in 2001, when my boyfriend moved in and brought his dvd player with him! I decided to upgrade my massive collection of videos to dvd's.
In the process of doing this I realised how cheaply some dvd's were going for on ebay, and decided to dabble a little more by buying and reselling some. So far I have not made my fortunes, or enough to retire, but I am having great fun, listing my items and then checking to see if people have bid on them or not. The thrill of bidding for something, to see if you are going to be outbid, or will win the item... The excitement as you wait for the cheques to roll in, so you can bank them and pay for some more dvd's!
I try to buy "bulk lots" only now, for no more than £5 each for well known titles, the profit can be anything from £1 upwards per title depending on how high the bid goes. I recently made £15 profit on one rare DVD! However you can also make losses if you buy the wrong titles, so you must be aware of this before you start out.
Another tip, is to send each item recorded delivery or at least get proof of pstage, this saves a lot of hassle if someone claims that they have not received the item! I send everything first class and obtain a proof of posting certificate. This stops people claiming that they have not received the dvd!
There are some negatives of course, there are timewasters who think its funny to bid on your item, then not pay you for it! or bid when they have no intention of paying, but these are far outnumbered by the many people who pay immediately.
Each Ebay member has a rating, which tells you how much feedback they have from other members, and you can read this to see if they are "good or bad ebayers"!
You pay a listing fee to sell your item as well, based on the starting price that you list it for.
So far I have only dabbled with dvd's, I have a full time job and this is only really a hobby, although of course I shall be declaring it on my tax return as I am an accountant, and have no excuse not to!
I find it easiest personally to receive payment by Paypal, however I do add on an extra 50p to cover their charges, or you can lose a lot of money by accepting payment in this way.
Paypal is an intermediary, who allow you to register a credit card and bank account with them. You can them pay for your purchases through this account, and can also receive money this way from your sales. They do charge to receive money. It's 25p plus 3.5% on smaller amounts. You can then send amounts of over £50 to your bank account for free, or for 25p if under £50.
I would recommend Ebay to anyone, whether you are buying or selling, as there are some really great bargains to be had. There is a section called going going gone, and if you watch this you can grab some bargains at the last minute, although of course you must expect people to snatch things away from you at the last minute too!
The site is well laid out, with selling and buying pages, it is easy to keep track of items, and when people have received them they leave feedback for you, and you do likewise.
There are thousands of items for sale, some very strange catagories, but there are clothes, cd's, business opportunities and much much more.
Go check it out for yourself, you know you want to!

I rated your op VH because it is very "genuine". There are a few things you could improve though, like getting rid of those annoying caps and rearranging the layout, it looks quite messy right now!

This sounds well worth a look.

A bit of space between your paragraphs would be lovely hon... help my eyes out...
Advantages: free, a whole huge vast and fascinating range of goods on offer, ability to sell items yourself, feedback system builds your rep as buyer/seller, well designed site, account info available Disadvantages: crooks can operate but not regularly and eBay insurance can cover some of costs lost
