I'd come across ebay before, whenever I ran a search for something on the 'net, however I'd never really paid attention to it. Then a customer of mine mentioned he'd raised £200 that week from visiting car boots sales/second hand shops - and then selling the products on ebay! I decided to check it out!
The site is fairly well laid out, and the system of registration and buying/selling is easy to use for newcomers.
I was truly amazed at some of the items available! Things I expected to find (clothes, china, collectables) and stuff I didn't - including packets of crisps!
I decided to try the process out. I had a pair of boots, much loved but little worn (thigh length leather boots from my hippy chick stage - now I'm a respectable mother of three and business woman!) so I polished them up and put them up for sale, starting at £1.50. To my amazement, they ended up selling for £26!
I am now officially hooked! I have scoured my house from top to bottom looking for unused, little used, interesting or collectable items (the top of the boys toy cupboard looks promising - all those unwanted birthday presents!) which will gradually make their way into my "shop".
That's another feature of the site - you can open your own "shop front" in which to feature your items. The idea is that someone bidding for something of yours sees you have a shop and takes a look, thereby increasing the exposure of your items.
All in all I have been fairly impressed with my experience. However I do have some reservations.
How trusting can one really be of strangers, world wide, offering goods that you are expected to buy unseen? Yes, there is a system to address that, using escrow (a third party takes the money, you send the goods for examination, if you keep them the money is sent on, if you return them you get your money back). However, not every seller offers that service.
All in all, as long as you keep a "buyer beware" attitude and either a) only look at goods you really want or b) see it as a bit of fun and a "lucky dip" you shouldn't be disappointed in your buying experience.
As the for the selling, its great! Saves me having to take endless phone calls from morons if I put a free ad in my local, or getting wet at a boot fair!
Over all, the site gets my vote.

My boyfriend and I have also become addicted to this site. I think it is a great way of being able to clear out your junk, and you know what they say. One mans junk is another mans treasure! Georgina.
