I'm back and I'm happy I've found a new love and her name is E-bay. For me E-bay has always been a mythical unreachable object, in all fairness the effort required to reach it was very minimal. I saw people getting hooked on it quicker than George Best can run to the bar for last orders, but could not understand why. Was it some geeky compulsion to be on the Internet looking for something to enrich otherwise dull lives? Possibly, but now I have reached this new Holy Grail my tainted views have been realigned. This website is a masterstroke, pure genius I tell you, where else can you by a Picasso artwork and an ex-army soviet truck, or a $2 fake Britney picture along with a Scottish castle, it’s crazy. As a film buff I questioned whether there would really be anything there for me, anything really of worth you know. Well my bank manager will happily verify that I have found what I'm looking for in oh so many forms. I can’t help myself, I get hypnotized by the powers of e-bay and it somehow persuades me to part with my money for something I had never previously realised that I needed or indeed wanted. My film hero’s are De Niro (predictably) and Dennis Hopper (perhaps less so), I thought I would just have a goosy around the place for something to call my own, now I've got stuff getting sent through constantly, they’ve actually called a flood warning in my area because of my out of control buying.

Anyone out their who, like I was is a little sceptical about the merits of this single website, I urge you to try it think of something you’d really like have a butchers on E-bay and theirs a fair chance it or something completely different but equally enticing will take your fancy. Become like me a born again E-Bayer, it is a religion without boundaries and conflict, we have no set hours or times for our worship, but are always made welcome. The layout of the site is easily manageable, my 72-year-old granddad is always on it and if he can understand it any technophobes out there should also be able to do likewise. The crux of E-Bay is a simple search engine, where you type in what you want and it attempts to find the item and others related to it. E-Bay also segments the items into their various hollows with areas such as Film, Music, Automotive and Collectables, if your just after a browse these sub-sections are a good way of getting about. E-Bay is an auction thus you never no ho much your going to have to pay, it could be a real bargain or may be what you expect very rarely is it over and above what you ere looking to pay. It may not have the excitement of a Bargain Hunt auction room, the hub of noise, the fluorescent skin of a television antiques collector but the login and bid strategy makes it a far easier option. Signing up is as simple a task as writing your name and devising some crazy login details, you can be on in 10 minutes ready to bid, what could be better they cried? Well I reply it’s all free too a ha. Anyhew the navigation is simple and fairly formulaic, it has no hidden quirks that no other website has it has gamely joined the Internet status quo and is better for it. Payment options are equally simple, they have a pay pal system which is an instant payment from buyer to seller, you have to sign up for this but it can be worth it, and because it’s free I don’t mind. Lots of sellers don’t accept Pay Pal (they have to pay a small percentage of the fee back to the company), thus often a banker’s draft or personal cheque can be sent directly to the person to whom the money is owed. People fear E-Bay because it is different; it offers something that could rarely be found previously. Their fear is unfounded simply because E-bay is just another way to shop, as long as you set parameters and ask relevant questions it will cost you nothing and you can safely purchase whatever you want.

But alas for every over the top exhalation their must also be a damp squib to quell the enthusiasm. As with any large Internet area where thousands mingle and mull for hours upon end, there are those odd people just out to destroy my happy existence. But fear not as long as you’re not foolish enough to part with your money without any official documentation you should be safe my friends. I shall tell you a tale of woe that was told to me by a friend of a friend (Bad start I know but try and bear with me), he did enter this hollowed website and bought a very expensive piece of electrical equipment from a seller. However this seller was a first time seller, to most this would raise some alarm, but this plucky fellow ventured out into the unknown and purchased said electrical item. He duly sent his money and waited, and waited and waited, but still nothing came, this called for some concern, he did have one saving grace E-Bay stores records of all the members home phone numbers, addresses etc. So he gamely attempted to contact the fiend through these details, but wherever he contacted he received the same negative answer “Mr X doesn’t live I'm afraid”. The conclusion to this story has not yet been made thus really it remains only a half story, but hopefully it ably demonstrates the ease with which fools can be parted from their money, especially when it’s all electrical rather than face to face.

Enough of the problems with buying from a user interface rather than a physical source, lets not dwell on such trivialities, but instead return to my endless hype for this mere website. We all have our faults, I myself hail from Portsmouth, so lets not look at what could conceivably happen but look at the joy, which has overcome millions worldwide. The world has finally been united by a greater good (and for once I'm not about Bush and his poodle) it is an unimposing junkshop as well as a high art dealers, it’s a car sales room without the slimy salesmen, you can get almost anything you want and it’s under one banner line. I have jumped on the bandwagon late, but no matter, for I am now well and truly on it and rolling with it. My advice to E-Bay virgins is to take the plunge, if you don’t like it slink out at the shallow end but if you like it just keep going and swimming those lengths (It was supposed to be a swimming metaphor what with the diving but I got tired of trying to think of swimming things, thus leaving you with that tripe). Have a goosy, peruse, browse and view, whatever you wish to call it the ethos remains the same, it is a force of good in a bad, bad world and should be embraced by all. E-bay is the remedy for all those who fear the Internet and all it offers; once they get their signed Elvis album or Warhol artwork those frigid fears will be visibly washed away. This is not an advertisement; it comes as a genuine, but admittedly comical overview of what I see as being the E-Bay experience. There is no fault with the website but only in the occasional humans who inhabit it, an accurate metaphor for the current world we live in. Thank you very much for bearing with this review I hope it will encourage you in all the right ways and warn you in equal measure.

Adieu
