I have got to say I think ebay.co.uk is the greatest thing since sliced bread!

I must admit I am slowly - or much quicker than I thought I would do - getting addicted to it. I even keep flicking backwards and forwards to it whilst I am writing this! One word springs to mind...MAD!

I wouldn't say I have spent a fortune on ebay. Well - then again - I'm not too sure. But you can get items for so so so much cheaper than you would ever find them on the high street - unless they were damaged. for example, I purchased a 100ml bottle of Cool Water for women for a bargain price of £13.99.

Anyway...less about me...more about ebay.

You have to register before you do anything...even if you just want to buy one item.
The registration form is pretty straight forward. It just asks for basic information such as name, address, date of birth, telephone numbers, and debit/credit card numbers. Just to double check I suspect that you are who you say you are. Ebay send you a confirmation email, simply click the link that is on there and you will be a member of the world’s biggest online market place.

Finding items is simple. There is a ‘normal’ search or an advanced search to choose from. You can also use the category section that is down the left-hand side of the screen. Browsing on ebay lets you explore all items in a certain category while searching lets you search across all categories or selected categories based on the keywords you enter.

Bidding is easy on ebay. You just simply find an item that you want,,,place the highest amount that you wish to bid and ebay will do the rest using automatic bidding. I would advise not to go too high if it is a new auction as you may be outbid in the last few minutes of it. I tend to wait until it has reached the final hour and then keep a really close eye on all the items I am bidding on using my ebay summary page.

The site layout I think is very good. It is easy to navigate, the search facilities are fantastic, you also get your own personal ebay summary which shows up everytime you log in. On this screen you can see what you have won, what you haven't won, the totals of that you have won, buying reminders, selling reminders, favourite searches. I'm sure if you are already a member you will know what I mean.

The help page is fantastic...it has lots of sections to help you work your way around the site. Such as information on bidding, selling, methods of payment.

Another element on the site is the Buy It Now feature.
Some people list items at a set price and it is a straight sale so there is NO bidding involved, you just pay the price as you would in a shop.
Other people may combine both types of sale, listing a starting price for bidding and a Buy It Now price. So you could see an item listed at 50p, but with a Buy It Now price of £10. If you are prepared to pay that amount you simply click on buy it now and confirm as you would if you were bidding and the sale will finish straight away.

Some people on there you do have to watch. I have made some daft mistakes myself…we all do.
I sometimes bid on an item thinking I have made a really good decision, then I realise that the postage and packaging costs are sky high. Some people also charge you if you are going to be paying for the item via Paypal (online bank service), it is usually only around 5% of the final selling price. It is just a bit of a waste of time working it all out really.

Ebay do charge fees for listing your items on the site. Fair enough really - they have to make their money somehow! It doesn’t cost anything to be a member of ebay and it also doesn’t cost you anything to be a buyer other than the money you pay the sellers for the goods and the delivery charges that they stick on. Some are crafty and say an email will be sent out at the end of the auction to confirm delivery...this can be quite high as I have found out in the past.
To sell items on ebay, you are charged a fee depending on the starting bid which is only usually about 20p for starting bids up to about £5.
When the auction has ended, ebay will charge you a percentage of the final amount price. This isn't usually very high so nothing to worry about.

There is also a feedback section. A bit like the ratings on Ciao really apart from you get coloured stars and not ‘dots’! The higher the feedback, the more trusted the member is supposed to be. I usually check the feedback before I go bidding on an item just to check that they are a reputable seller. So I would advise this to you if you are new to ebay. It’s just a way of quickly looking to see if they are a reliable seller or buyer.I also ask people to email me if they have a low feedback score so I have written proof that they do genuinely want to bid on an item and they are not just fooling around. Non-paying bidders are probably the only thing I hate on ebay…especially when they have bid a large amount of money for an item and then you can not get hold of them to request a payment. This can easily be sorted out by reporting it to ebay. Ebay do encourage you to report all non-paying bidders and they can be suspended from the site as a result.

I would recommend ebay to anyone…although like I said…it can get addictive!

Good luck…and happy bidding!!

We sold loads of stuff on here when we had a bit of a clearout. It is addictive when you're buying and selling. You usually find what you're looking for on there as well.
