I have heard about ebay uk from a friend way back a couple of years now. My initial reaction is apprehension and anxiety. I am apprehended by the fact that I could be swinddled in this internet auction site. The reputation of the site was 50-50. Not all gloomy though. It has the rewards of financial gains. Like any internet site nowadays you want to make sure that the webpage that is being access is the one and truly original webpage because you might end up being a victim of phising(data stealing from bogus sites). Ebay had been a success story that many people are exploiting it, positively and negatively.
So what is my experience?
General: Up to the present, my outlook of ebay is still 50/50. My apprehension and my wary is still there. I still keep my guard on. I have been a victim of bogus bidding, a scam work and it almost costs me money. Though, on the brighter note I had some old stuff sold in ebay and made some decent cash.
Presentation: As a whole if you go to the ebay uk website,
it is not far different from its US counterpart. It is straight forward. The instruction is in English. Please note though that not all ebay sites are made in English language. That I have learnt because one time I wanted to access ebay hong kong...it was in chinese. Nonetheless the format is your average website. Not to flashy and not to glamourous. It is just plain and simple. There are tabs where in you choose which category you want to access. I have heard recently that a child made a bidding on his parents account and bought a car...that shows how the lay out and design is plain and simple.
Navigation: You could navigate quite easily with the use of your mouse. One click is all you need. Unlike other websites, ebay do not force you to sign in first before seeing the info you wanted to access. You could find an item with out being signed in. I found my self one time being trapped in a website to put my details just to find the info I wanted and ended up not wanting the information at all.
Layout: The lay out has change quite better now. They have got this picture of what you wanted to buy and has motives like antiques and coins are grouped together. It has a variety of links as well, in the webpage where in you might want to explore. The lay out though changes everytime you access the site...therefore the ending now section usually is changed by something probably £20 under section. This I do not like. I mean I just wanted a bargain deal...that are ending now. But as a marketplace they need to sell their other stuff. I just do hope that the ending now section will be constant and will not change even though you access the site several times.
Design: White background loads of space and big pictures are the qualities of ebay that I would say differentiate from the rest. If you go to another auction site, it is crammed and loads of words all together. The picture sometimes are deceiving in ebay well that is advertising for you though. Not all pictures are real.
Upload/Download: Relatively easy to upload/ and download information. Usual time for me to put a picture is a couple of seconds to minutes depends on how big the picture. Accessing the website is dependant on the server of you internet but generally okayfor me.
Content update: As much as ebay wanted it, it is almost real time. I said almost real time. It is not yet perfect but I am hoping that it will. I will put it on loads of factors to consider until it will be realtime. The trick though is that watch and read the item carefully. Just do not bid with impulse. You might end up sorry. It has an are as well where in updates are being given frequently. These updates are just to remind people that there are things to look forward to with ebay. Again if you do not read then you are sorry.
Future: With the ongoing improvement that the management of ebay is undertaking there is a hope in the future. They have improved some services that will make the auction site an edge to those others in the web domain. Though it is more of the aesthetic side of things, I am hoping that they would put their efforts in security.
Security & Privacy: Well, as I have mentioned in my previous notes, ebay most vulnerable part of their business is security. Yup,let us not be callous about it. That is the truth. Give you an experience of mine that would demonstrate that security is poor. There is this ebayer(some one who engaged in ebay) who bid and bid in my lot until he/she won. It turn out to be that he/she is scambug. And there is someone claiming that a person hacked into his ebay. How many of this story I have? Loads. The thing that saved me from those wretched souls(mostly and do not get me wrong is from africa) is being vigilant. Privacy, this again is another thing to question ebay. I have loads of chinese companies offering me things and buy from them when in truth if I try to ask one question to another ebayer that I see something interesting there is this security check. C'mmon what is happening? Well, I do not expect that ebay is the safest are on the planet. But come to think of it they own paypal. So ironic. How would they safeguard things?
Search facility: In fairness this feature is rated good by me. The search functions of ebay is somewhat useful. It gives you options from the exact words to just a word on your search. Very handy when you are looking for something.
Bid tracking function: Now, this I have a so-so comment. Why? One is that bid could be tracked and that you could see who is biddiing but the thing now is that they put private bidders. Somewhat good but conspiracy theory say that any one could abuse the system. With private selling how could you know that the auction is genuine and not just a mock auction? Difficult to prove yeh. Well, the best way is to ask.
Ability to customise: YOu could customise if you have the money. Anything to add? None i think, it speaks loudly. ebay is a money making site.
Customer support: Well, in my experience, i am blessed. The customer service of ebay was there to help me.
in closing i think ebay is a place for the brave men.......... I would reccommend it but with much caution.
Good Luck and Happy bidding. And by the way do not forget to check my items.

The thing about eBay is that the whole operation is based on trust - and unfortunately there are scumbags out there that can't be trusted with their own pride let alone responsibility, and there is nothing stopping them from using eBay - so from time to time you get problems when you encounter a scumbag - eBay could do with some anti-scumware. Thanks for the good review...

I've had lots of fun with ebay. Btw are you English? Your writing style is unusual! x
Advantages: Like a giant car boot sale, without ever leaving the house Disadvantages: Has an air of riskiness about it, though you could choose sellers with very high feedback for safety's sake
