Well after reading a few of the other reviews what can you say. In my opinion Ebay on the whole is a useful and practical site for most people. Unfortunately there are, 'amongst its members' quite a number of frauduant and dishonest people. Their only goal is to get as much money paid to them in the quickest time and then disappear. Be wary oy recent members offering a large number of 'high end, high priced goods at LOW prices' as these tend to be the 'scams' that work the best . This is not the only 'scam' used, there is also the 'I posted your item, you will have to claim from post office if it has not arrived' and then these sellers 'block' your emails so you can not contact them. And the WORST of th issues is that Ebay keep letting these 'SCAMMERS' on to the system, once they have made a quick killing the first time around and either close the account or ebay closes it, they just change their 'username' and start all over again. Surely with ebays 'so called' 'high level security' they should be able to check 'ip addresses' and block these people from continuing to RIP OFF the genuine people who use Ebay for its intended use, but they seem quite content to 'sit back and do nothing' as wether its a fraudulant act or not THEY still get THEIR FEE'S.
EVENTUALLY AFTER YOU 'DEFEAT THE MAZE OF FAQ' AND FINALLY GET TO SEND A MESSAGE TO EBAY.
Then once again it is the average person that looses out and not the 'BIG FISH', and if you make to much 'fuss' they close your account ,while they investigate the matter', and then it is almost impossile for the 'genuine user' to either have the 'ban' on their account lifted or to 'open a new account' as Ebay 'monitor' the ip address of 'known trouble makers'. So once again the 'little guy suffers while the big fish make huge profits'. And so the circle continues and as the quotes states: ""THE RICH GET RICHER WHILE THE POOR GET POORER"". ""No truer word has ever been spoken.""

I've come across so many dodgy buyers on Ebay as well as the odd seller

There are dodgy sellers on eBay but a lot of good ones too (I ran a 100% positive feedback shop there for two years until last month when I was forced to close because they raised the fees to small shops like myself so exorbitantly that it was no longer possible to continue). A good rule of thumb is simply only buy from established sellers with 99-100% feedback. Don't buy expensive laptops or sports cars from sellers with 0 feedback! Regarding blocking IP addresses, due to the fact that most ISPs dynamically reassign these every time a user turns their broadband router on, this is not practical. The baddie's IP address could be reassigned to some perfectly innocent individual who may be an eBay member, who would find him/herself blocked and wouldn't have a clue why!

I've bought quite a bit on ebay and no problems yet (touch wood) but I only tend to buy from sellers who have been on the site for a while and have positive feedback. Welcome to ciao
Advantages: great value & fun with exotic bargins, find anything and everything Disadvantages: some silly people can let the side down with non-payment and thoughtless feed back.
