When Yahoo! dropped their bombshell that they were closing down their UK Online Auction site, there was much "wailing and gnashing of teeth", particularly from high volume sellers of low-priced items. Yahoo! nominated eBay as their "preferred replacement". However, because Yahoo! UK had been completely free, it proved impossible for these sellers to survive when faced with the relatively high charging structure in place on eBay UK.

The result was a torrent of half baked, and plagiarised new sites (as well as some relaunched or re-advertised ones), most of which were run on a shoestring, with totally inadequate bandwidth and Server support, a lack of proper security controls and little or no hands on Customer Support.
