I signed up for Excite email predominantly to handle form-processing from my website. I thought it was best to keep it separate from my homeemail account, as it was likely I might change that sometime in the future. The web services (provided by bravenet.com, see my other op!) require you to keep the email you register with, so I needed to have an account with a company that wasn't likely to close after a year or less.
Excite is reliable in the sense that it's a huge business, so not likely to fold, anytime, ever. However, sometimes the server goes down at Excite which means I can't access my inbox. This can be incredibly frustrating -especially as the Excite front page (which is personalised) tells me I have mail! When you approach Excite's support team, you never (in my experience) get a reply explaining the problem.
The personalisation of your Excite front page, and the Mail hub page is straightforward. You can adjust colour schemes and icons, you can add a 'signature' to your emails and set up folders for organising your mail. There is also a facility to block SPAMs, which is a particularly useful feature.
I mainly use the Mail facility with Excite, although the website as a whole does have a lot to offer. You can select areas of interest for the front page. For instance, on my front page I have news, weather and horoscopes (on my excite.CO.UK front page I also have TV listings). Excite also has its own Chat rooms, which I used to have access to from the front page, but this module has now been discontinued.
Other services/links from Excite include photo storage, e-cards, search, music downloads and personal ads. I have no use for most of these, so cannot give you a complete description. The search facility doesn't match Google's standards, so I rarely use it. The personal ads are very amusing to trawl through, although I haven't found a use for it YET!!!
So, back to the Mail, the most-used feature. It's not clear how long items remain in the Trash folder once deleted. I'd say about 3 days. I've been able to retrieve mail most times I've had second thoughts about having dumped it!
The failure of Inbox access lasts usually no more than a day. It has been as short as 10 minutes which was no big deal, but the time it took 3 days to access the inbox nearly (only nearly) drove me to seek a new account.
There's a 2-point-something limit on storage, which is okay (sufficient) and it is possible to send images but they can take a while to upload. It has, on occasion, refused to send long replies to long emails (with the original message attached) on the grounds that it is too large a file. So if you are often dealing with a lot of megabytes, Excite Mail probably isn't for you.

Review of excite.com
Advantages: 'Inbox hub' is an intuitive interface, with helpful links to related services. Also, quite good storage capacity. Disadvantages: Attachments are slow and server crashes are frequent. My account was hacked once; poor security and no inbox filtering or spam preventors.
